Bowline, By MARTHA CASSIDY Thursday night found the fair keglers of the Lady Bug league busy at work after a nice Thanksgiving holiday. Maybe a little out of practice but a lot fuller of the 'old turkeys.' I think those Safeway gals have been doing a little prac ticing on the side, because they sure took three games from Hazel's Beauty shop. Safeway, we give you a lot of credit, for you started with the lowest handicap this year and certainly are doing a fine job of showing everyone that it Isn't the handi cap but the good old team-work and spirit that counts. Keep up the good work gals, you'll make it to the top yet. I think we should refer to Hazel's Beauty shop as the 'Hazel's beauties," did you no tice those lovely dresses all the team was wearing? Such nice outfits. Hey! what was all the racket over on one and two? You might have known it, that flashy Crater Hotel team drop ped Houston's Beauty shop for two and practically tied up all the league standings. But you can't get ahead of Fluhrer's, right in there striking away to take two from Coca Cola to re main tied for second place with Crater hotel. Things were sure hot on three and four, where we find that hardhlttin' Daggett's Insurance kcgling their hearts out and dropping Black & White for the count of two. But it was a tough battle and Black & White says things are going to be dif ferent next time. . I have had several requests to have the individual scores printed each week. We'll see if it can't be arranged so one and all can look see. Bye. for now, be seeing you on eight. (Spec) Keene, for 18 years ath letic director and head football coach at Willamette university, resigned yesterday to go into the sporting goods business, Keene was discharged from the navy a few days ago, having served more than two years as a lieutenant commander in the navy physical education pro gram. The university had granted him a leave of absence while he was in the navy, and today's resignation was a surprise, as he was expected to return to the campus. Keene said he would become a partner of Howard Maple, former Willamette coach, who operates a sporting goods house here. President G. ' Herbert Smith of the University said he was disappointed at the resignation, asserting it is "one of the great est losses the. university ever has suffered." J- - Ben Sherman Gets Nod Over Jones; Mask Draws By HALE SCARBROUGK Last night's rassling card had a little bit of everything in it. As expected, Rough Rufus Jones was on the spot from the time he crawled through the hemp. He was the first guy tossed in the battle-royal and was fol lowed closely by Seattle's Ben Sherman. Pete Belcastro went out next, under strenuous protest . from Pete himself, and Wally Moss had to flag the Weed .Assassin away, leaving Joe Lyman, Her bie Parks and the tenacious Grey Mask in the ring. Lyman and Parks ganged up on the Mask and put the old fellow away in short order. That made the pairing Jones and Sherman, Belcastro and the Hood and Lyman and Parks for three one-fall matches. Ben Sherman got a disqualifi cation nod over. Jones in the first bout after the Neanderthal negro had loosed his fury on Moss. In the second canto Rufus battered Sherman all over the ring, and out of it a couple-of times, with his ebony dome. While Wally was attempting to help Ben back onto the mat Jones objected to the point of smashing a head butt Into , the referee's face. Jones scrambled to his feet and got in another couple of butts on Sherman's skull, then Moss came to life to award the fight to Sherman by disqualifi cation. Ben was so groggy he had to be dragged away from the ring. Popular Pete Bejfcastro, bat tered and bleeding, managed to go the distance with the Grey Mask without a flop.- Pete worked away at the eyeloops of the Hood's facial covering, which must be made of corru gated sheet plastic from the beating it takes, and managed to draw blood from the old boy's face. The Mask countered with head butts at every opportunity and had the Weed Wildman half insensible toward the last Three times Belcastro tried for his be loved surfboard but every time the veiled one dived for the ropes. . In the main event Joe Lyman proved that he's a very good man, even with one hand behind him. Herbie Parks managed to hold on to an arm lock through most of the first canto but Lithe Lyman was slick enough to wig gle out when he was in danger of being pinned.. The first round was pure, un adulterated muscling and the boys drew a round of applause at every clean break. Parks started getting a bit rough in the second frame but he figured without the cat-like speed of the Redmond lad. After slamming Lyman to the floor half a dozen times, Parks bound ed into the ropes for a Sonnen burg but Joe launched a light-nine-fast droDkick to the Cana dian's chin and followed up with a dropkick to gain the fan. i EVERY SATURDAY J 9:00 until 1:00 1 Tj.LL4.LC Dll Make a Date fortheDancel "Keep controls, policies end planning for game fish In the hands of agencies close to the people," advised Dr. Paul Need ham, fish expert of the state game commission. In a talk to the annual Izaak Walton league goose dinner last night. Dr. Needham took note of the various regional authority ideas that are being promoted in congress, and salcl that taking the authority for fish programs out of the hands of state agencies would be "a bad thing." A former member of the staff of the federal fish and wildlife service, he nevertheless argued for decentralization of control in handling fish problems. - Dr. Needham spoke of the threat to Oregon game fish in dam construction proposed for various state streams, and pointed out the importance of careful game commission studies to provide effective ' ammuni tion to fight the dam schemes. Dams proposed for the Rogue river, the Row river, and the Santiam river at Detroit were mentioned. ' Dr. Needham said the game commission has a backlog of $1,000,000 to start its postwar program, which he outlined in three parts: Hatchery produce tion development, stream and lake surveys, research. He argued for development of fishing in Odell and Cres cent lakes in the north Klamath country as a plan for spread ing the angling intensity which is so notable at Diamond, Pau lina and East lakes. . The fish expert reported number of , interesting facts about Oregon fish developed in studies. These include: . i It takes 75 cents to produce a pound of trout. Only 16 per cent of the eggs laid by eastern brook, brown or rainbow trout survive the first summer. The winter loss of trout, in , the colder parts of the state is 60 per cent. - Fifteen per cent of the fish in a stream at a certain time will be found there 18 months later. Life expectancy of trout i three to four years. j Among fall-planted finger- ' lings less than three inches long, only 1 per cent survive. Of 6 to 10-inch fish planted in the fall, only 6 to 10 per cent survive. Of legal- fish planted in the spring or summer. 45 to 50 per cent survive. . Fry planted in lakes bring good results.- - " Ted Conn , of Lakeview and Kenneth Denman of Medford, members of the state game com mission, headed a group of game officials here for. the Walton dinner. Frank Wire, state game supervisor, spoke briefly in ad vance of Needham's talk. John Ebinger, president of the local chapter of the league, pre sided at the session. The Kiwan is chorus, with Fred Southwell -leading, sang several numbers.; , Cold Mornings Keeping Birds Out Of Fields These cold, frosty mornings apparently aren't making early duck and goose hunters any too happy, from all reports. The cold weather is keeping the birds away from grain fields until late in the morning. A number of hunters in the past two or three days have re ported they're unable even to get a shot early in the morning. The birds are staying in the : refuges and on the lakes, keep ing away from small ponds and fields.. . ,-. : FIGHTS LAST NIGHT By The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA Billy Fox, 1701, Philadelphia, TKO'd Leon Szymurski, Chester, Pa.; (2); Johnny Finney, 160, Philadel phia, TKO'd Leonard Pate, 1561, (5)."
