Plane Crash
WALHALLA, S. C, Nov. 28
Brig. Gen. George H. Weems,
five other army officers and an
enlisted man parachuted to safe
ty when an army transport plane
crashed In rainy weather near
here lust night.
Weems and three others, Capt.
Charles B. Taylor, Capt. Arthur
T. Cortlcr and Lt. Julian Hayes,
were located shortly after their
C-45 transport had crashed In a
wooded, mountainous area. A
few hours later the pilot, 1st. Lt.
R. A. Phillips, was located high
in a tree. A fire was built to
help keep him awake until he
could descend after daylight.
The remaining men, Capt.
Richard Tukcy, public relations
officer for the past four years at
Fort Benning, and Sgt. L. R.
Gauldln, were found several
hours after dawn.
