Chelan City Of Sorrow After Bus Plunge Takes Lives Of 15 Youngsters ' CHELAN, Wash., Nov. 27 () Chelan today was a city of sor row, its town hall ready for duty as a morgue, its beautiful . Lake Chelan an icy ogre which had swallowed a. community ot children when an inbound school bus left the road yesterday and , carried : 15 youngsters and its driver to death in the' deep waters. ;. Six persons, five children and a woman passenger, escaped. Mrs. Ted Brown, the passenger, said Driver Jack Randle, 26, stood up and fought the wheel when the bus struck a rck in the snow-swept road ' and , swerved over a 20-foot bank in to the lake. Bus Sinks The bus sank slowly, the air trapped ' inside delaying its descent. The survivors escaped through windows broken either in the plunge down the bank or by the frantic children. Divers who rushed from Grand League Dinner Cost Clarified John Ebinger, president of the izaak Walton league, said today there may be some misunder standing concerning the cost for f nciay nignt s league dinner. The cost, he said, is purely a service charge of the hotel for preparing and serving the geese and ducks, furnishing the sup plemental food items for the dinner, and furnishing the wil lard hotel accommodations of the Blue Room and the main dining room, on a per person basis. The entire cost goes to the hotel. There will be no profit to the league and none is intended. In addition to. personal cost to de fray the hotel expenses, the league out of its own fund is having the birds dressed by com mercial pickers. ' Ebinger said the league hopes all who love outdoor sports will come to the dinner and bring their ladies. There will be tur key for those who prefer it. The dinner will be held at 7 p. m., preceded by a cocktail hour in the Blue Room at 6:30 p. m. Dr. Paul Needham, fish director for the state game com mission, will show a technicolor film of field activities of his department. The bus served the farming community of 25 Mile Creek and residents of the area said last night nearly every school child from the community was aboard, One boy, Joe Burdett, 15, came home from a Thanksgiving Day visit to an aunt in Pomeroy, Wash., to learn the fate of nearly all his friends. A. R.. Rice, Chelan school teacher who lives at 25 Mile Creek, and his son, Alan, normal ly ride the bus but were follow ing it yesterday in their car. They reached the scene in time to rescue Mrs. Brown and help Rice's daughter, Margaret, and utnei Keck ashore. All the children and Mrs. Brown, who suffered from shock and exposure, are reported in good condition last night. Still missing were Anne, 10, and Karl Dam, 6; Dorothy Davis, 18, sister of Henry; Betty, 12, and Larry Miller, 8; Jean, 13, and Ponna Keck, 7, sisters of Ethel; Stewart, 6, and Douglas Male 8: Lewis, 11, and Barbara Ask' lund; Ruth Hawley, 10, Ronald Ayers, 13, and Bernard Gumore, 9. Hunt, Ashland and his daughter-in- law, Mrs. Cecil Hunt and baby daughter, Bonanza, have been guests. Hunt is an old time neighbor of tne uaiieys. . Ruth Goodrich and Wanda Needles are holding meetings in the Malin Presbyterian church each evening except Sat urday. The service begins at 7:30 and the public is cordially invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Blatch. recent residents of Malin and formerly of Merrill spent the Thanksgiving holiday with their daughter and son-in-law. Air. and Mrs. Scott Samsel and baby daughter Kathleen of Hills- boro. Mr.- and Mrs. Merle Loosley and daughter Dorothy spent the last week end in Corvaius witn their son John, student at Ore gon State college. ioosley is a sraduate of the same college.
