Long-distance callers could reach all Orkgon towns today, although repaii crews were still working on some lines, knocked down by falling trees. Western Union reported service to Tilla mook still out, broken by a slide which cut the lines. ' In Portland, a thousand tele phones were out of commission in the wake of high winds which sent trees over lines and water which seeped into cables. , Coast guard boats and planes were searching for the army plane whose pilot radioed at 3:15 p. m. yesterday that his fuel was . almost exhausted and the crew would "hit the silk." The radio report came from 16 to 18 miles west of the coastal town of Florence. The twin-engine plane left Oakland, Calif., yesterday for McChord Field, Tacoma. Wash. Unable to lana because of over cast and heavy ram, it was or dered to Pendleton, Ore., where the field was reported clear. Army officials did not know why the plane strayed from its prescribed course. High Seas Lt. E. S. Klock, USCG, re ported gales and high seas pre vented boats from the Newport coast guard station from leav ing but a patrol craft from the i Empire station, near Coos Bay, took up the search last night. He said reports indicated the plane crashed at sea about 16 miles from Florence. " Elsewhere a 1 o n g the coast, communities cleaned up storm debris along waterfronts and checked battered small craft for damage in the wake of one of the year's worst coastal storms. Telephone, telegraph and electric repair crews were busy throughout western Oregon re storing service disrupted begin ning early yesterday. Craft Damaged At Astoria a 120-foot steel barge was returned to the moor ings from which high .seas broke it yesterday. Small fishing craft In the harbor were damaged. Earth and rock slides were re ported along most of the state's highways, and state highway engineers warned motorists to be careful driving secondary roads which crews may not yet have cleared. . The weather bureau reported rainfall yesterday boosted the month's total in the Portland area to 7.54 inches 2 Mi inches above the November normal.
