Proprietors Cubs Have Huge Load Of Talent Pre-War Sie Roster Will Be On Deck For Spring Training CHICAGO, Nov. 20 (IP) The search for baseball talent, a tough task for major league clubs In wartime, Is a simple as signment for the Chicago Cubs this fall. As of today, there are. 47 players on the Cubs' roster. There'll be more probably an other dozen or so added to that squad of more than five nine-man teams before the Na tional league champions open their spring training season at Catallna island in peoruary. Indications are that the spa- clous grounds of the island in the Pacific, to which the Cubs are returning for the first time since 1940, will be swarming with more players than trained at any two major league camps in wartime. Manager Charlie Grimm, who directed a parade of Cub pitch ers to the mound in a couple of world series games against De troit last October, will be knee deep in hurlcrs. There are 21 of them on the roster, including three back from navy service. Pitching was Grimm's biggest problem last season and it wasn't until the Cubs obtained Hank Borowy from the New York Yankees on July 28 that tne cluo became a pennant con tender. Borowy will be back together with the club's other top winners, Hank Wyse, Claude Passeau and Paul Derringer. The navy boys on the pitching roster are Vern Olsen, with the club before the war, Russ Meers and Dale Alderson. Grimm won't have enough catchers to allow each pitcher a private receiver, but there wiU be at least nine at the training camp, including two not listed on the roster but who will be out of military service shortly. Twelve Infielders are listed and as a starter Grimm has seven outfielders on the rolls. Since the job of signing players to contracts in past seasons hasn't been considered one of the Cubs' worries, it appears that Cholly Jolly Grimm will have lots of company on Cata Una next spring. JUST IN FOR FALL LOW FARES ,N0IV IN inia TO Tuesday Nov. 20, 194S Belcasiro May Be Gent To Topple Jones The Weed Assassin, Pete Bel- castro, may prove to be Just the gent the fans have been howling to have Rough Rufus Jones meet up with Friday night. Belcutro is no shy violet and can bo count ed on to carry the fight to the Dusky Dctroiter every minute. Pet Is a sensational-type fighter, usually managing to fiat himself bloodied up dur ng the bout, and his theory of rasaling is to do something, anything, and do it quick. Rough Rufus is another arnD- pier who isn't particularly both ered by orthodoxy in his tactics. The Neanderthal Negro Is prob- amy tne most cordially rated musclcr ever to slide through tho armory hemp and has dem onstrated repeatedly that he has no love for anyone connected with the Klamath Falls mat. A flip of a coin will decide whether the Jones-Belcastro fra cas or another one equally as heated between the Grey Mask and Angelo Martinelli will take top honors Friday night. Both bouts will be of six-round main event length. Martinelli demanded this re turn scuffle with the evil Mr. Stoncface, offering to fight for money, marbles or chalk, any where or anytime, with or with out a referee or audience. An gelo was burned up over the treatment he got from the Mask last Friday when the veiled one utilized his hood to try to blind the Buckeye Beauty, and also holds the brief that Referee Wally Moss gave him a bum deal during the excitement. Martinelli took a couple of swings at Moss during the course of the dispute, thereby becoming the fourth grappler to hang one on Wally's none-too-classic profile in as many weeks.
