LCIilhl eastern and central states accounted for over llirco million bushels of tho docllno unci tho 10 wi'Murn sliitns for only u lltllo over 7150,000 bushels. Idaho did (Imp almost u million bushels but this In accounted for by a S-bushel drop In yield rather than by abandonment. The crop estimate Is not likely to chuiiKo much In Decem ber except to tuko account of aercaiio revisions and lato re ports of ubundonmont. Yields aru fulrly well established. Hitch In this forecast Is thut yields aro reported , now upon tho basis of nnrvestod acreage, so If abandonment should bo under-estimated, both acreage and yields would be changed. Movement Last woak's shipments con tinued tho decllno started eurly this mouth. Total shipments for tlio week wore 4877 curs with a tl-duy uvorugfl of 813 cars com pared with 840 dally the prev ious week. Heaviest decllno was In tlio Red Itlvcr valley, with 37D cur under lust week. Maine Increased by 236 cars over tho previous week. Light movement In November Is nor mul as markets usually aro well supplied with heavy harvest time offerings. In general, growers aro tak ing stock, going slowly, looking things over have money in tho bunk, and don't have to hurry. Loan applications aro reported heavy In some impor tant areas. Putting potatoes under tlio loun reduces ship ments. Confirmation of tho Can adian and Belglnn deals for around 3 million bushols with a French deal still pending, tends to glvo tho bulls a boost. It's axiomatic thut potuto growers quit selling when tho market warms up, sell freely when It turns cosy. Gonulnc confidence is good; Indicates basic sound ness. But a regular and orderly flow In liberal volumo Is neces sary to get this year's crop mar keted bejorc warm weather and new-crop competition. Markets, Demand, and Prices Upstnto Now York reports do mnnd fair to moderate with prices 10 to 20 cents under tho floor. Colorado shows improve ment with tho market firm to about steady, and prices S cents below floor. Michigan demand Is alow, market about steady to strong, prices 10 cents under floor, Wisconsin demand Is slow, very few snles, no market some dnys, prlco 25 cents below floor,. Stable demand has been light to fair, market about steady, prices S to IS cents be low floor. Idaho demand Is mod erate, market steady to strong, prices 30 cents over floor. Red River valley points experienced Phone 3151 a alow demand, few sales, bettor feeling, market slightly strong er, prices 30 to 41) cents bolow floor. Most quotations are lor U. 8. No. 1, l.o A, but floors ore on U, S. No, 1 only. There fore, size A quotations iiuvo been reduced 10 cents for compari son with floor prices In this re port. Export domand Is reported vory good In Miilno, Now York, Michigan, Hod nivor vulloy, duo entirely to tho Canadian and Belgian deals, Terminal de mand Is mostly slow to steady. New York has held firm on cukU ern stock, dull for others. Chi cago is improving on Burbtmks, firm on best northern, dull on low grades, wcakor on Colorado McClurei. Price Support and Diversion Confirmation of tho Canadian and Belgian deals, closed late In October but lust announced officially, Is the best news since harvest from tho stundpolnt of providing additional outlots in volving Dig volumo movement through trado channels, Tho Canadian deal obviously re quires government financial aid, which evidently Is being shared between Canada and tho United States. But sales aro on a cus tomary basil, only requirements being that Canadian importers bo licensed and U. S. Hellers pay support prices to growers. Tho Belgian deal apparently Is dif ferent, since USDA is buying at support prices and delivering to tho Belgian government at ship- side. Total quantity involved Is around 9.3 million bushels. about 10 per cent of our totai estimated surplus. Sounds good to us, but If sales dry up, over bullish attitude might boom erang In tho spring. USDA can control the situation to some extent by calling louns, but co operation between UbUA and Industry Will be required to get Job done and the potatoes moved. Diversion to Industrial pro ducts continues about as report ed earlier, with end of freely moving supplies In sight for tho alcohol plant at Muscatine. Gov ernment stocks can't be large In the mid-west because buying ended somo time ago. Also, loans in emergency storage In adjacent areas arc being called, evidently to Keep by-products plants running and to prevent the possibility of losing pota toes through freezing. USDA would prefer to use lower grades In alcohol if the export deals can use tho good stock. The deal probably will work around to this basis when shipments out of winter storage get under way. Turkey Exhibit jgfo Will Be Held McMINNVlLLE. Nov. 20 (VP) Tho fifth annual Pacific coast turkey exhibit will bo held hero December 3-0 with siuuu in show money and 32 special awards. A representative of the Wat kins Products firm made an ap peal to the council for permis sion lo open a store here and e 1 1 through house-to-house solicitation. He suggested that some exception to the Green River - ordinance prohibiting house-to-house selling in Klam ath Falls be made for established firms. The decision of the council was that tlK ordinance was necessary to protect Klamath citizens from door-to-door - ted dling since they had asked that such a ruling be passed, how ever they agreed to consider any information regarding the prob lem of permitting established firms to operate in that way and at the same time excluding "fly by night peddlers. Meanwhile, the watklns firm will open a store and operate by the card system.
