NOW! y lli Oregon's Postwar Highway Program 1 Gets Underway With Awarding Of Bids PORTLAND, Ore., Oct SI UP) Two more west coast firms to day reported purchase of acreage in the Guild's lake housing pro ject and asked removal of homes for industrial construction. Just after Standard Oil bought 28 acres for a $1,000,000 asphalt plant, pacific Cham and Manu facturing comDanv acauired 12 acres to build the "only modern chain factory on the west coast" as soon as materials become available. The firm made ship anchor chain during the war, but expects to produce commercial types. The Mt. Hood Soap company announced purchase of an eight acre tract to build a plant four times the size of its present tructure here. Harry D. Freeman, Portland housing authority director, said about 252 housing units must be razed to make way for the asphalt plant. ' Building Materials Under OPA Control ; PORTLAND, Oct 31 (ff) Essential building materials have been placed under control of the district OPA, officials reported today. The OPA reported wholesale and retail dealers will be named to an industry advisory commit tee 4o help establish prices for materials which include stock millwork, doors, plywood, stock screen goods and possibly in stallation charges. PORTLAND, Ore.. Oct. 31 (P) Oregon's postwar highway pro crram was underway today, with awarding of $1,215,087.75 of bids by the state highway commis sion. ' . The commission authorized a survey of Sullivan's gulch, his toric gulley in Portland's east side, to determine its possible use as an express highway. The commission asked that in dustries not be located near the eulch until the $15,000 year-long survey is completed. The gulch provides right-of-way for Union Pacific lines from the east. A low bid of BeeDe uo., gal lon, Nev., on reoiling 34.57 miles of the Jdaho-oregon-wevaoa highway in the flight strip Mc Dermitt section was referred to the state engineer with power to award. . Similar action was taken on Pendleton Sand and Gravel com nany's $11,750 bid for Mission- Meacham rock production pro ject in Umatilla county. Biggest projects ewiuc were Pudding river bridge. Clearing 7.41 miles of Oregon Oregon's Blue Book Published Today SALEM, Oct. 31 () The Blue Book, Oregon's official directory, was published today, and will be sold by the state de partment for 25 cents a copy. Secretary of State Robert S. Farrell, Jr., said he would pub lish 30,000 copies, compared with 17,000 two years ago. The increase, made possible by in creased legislative appropria tion, was granted to allow more conies to be placed in schools. The book is published every two years. BABY DIES MONTREAL. Ti Plans for beautification of the Marine Barracks access road were discussed today by a com mittee of the Kiwanis club head ed by Ralph Howard. Respond ing to a proposal by Capt. L. T. Coggeshall of the Marine Bar racks that the Kiwanis club make this a club project, Presi dent Joe Hicks named a com mittee which has started work. The committee considered various types of trees and shrubs for plantings along the road. Chinese elms, poplars, and aspens were among tree types suggested. Committee members leaned strongly foward plantings of native shrubs, such as wild Dlum, choke cherry and service berry bushes in part of the roadside stretch. Effortwill be made to bring about improvement at the gar bage dump and on private pro perty along the route.
