Newspaper Page TextEIOHT HERALD AND MEWS DAR Conference Held Saturday Frank Jenkins, editor and publisher of The Herald and News, was the guest speaker at the noon luncheon meeting of the fifth district, Oregon Daughters of the American Revolution, held Sat urday at Mills school library. Mr. Jenkins returned about one month ago from an Inspection tour of the war areas of Europe. The scenes of destruction, the utter chaos and the death of the spirit are too awful to coiUom plate, said Mr. Jenkins, The ruins of Berlin and other large cities of Germany, and conditions In other countries were do- scribed by the speaker, and hep added, "When we see the conse quences of defeat we know con scription Is not too great a price to pay for self-preservation." Mrs. William D. Foster, presi dent of the fifth district, presid ed at the meeting and intro duced the speaker. Mrs. Lewis Hornby entertained with two violin numbers, "The Old Re frain," and "Schon Rosmarin," both by Kreisler. Mrs. Hugh T. Mitchelmore accompanied at the piano. t Mrs. L. F. Conn, secretary of the district, and regent of Lake view chapter, Mrs. Ruth Bricky, : Lakeview, and Mrs. Lorraine . Eriksen of Bend chapter were out-of-town members present. District officers elected to serve for the ensuing year are Mrs. J. Roy Roberts, Redmond, pres ident; Mrs. L. F. Conn, vice president; Mrs. Gertrude Gantz, Bend, secretary and treasurer. Attending the luncheon were Mrs. L. F. , Conn, Mrs. Ruth Bricky, Mrs. Lorraine Eriksen, Mrs. W. J. Owsley, regent of Eulalona chapter; Mr. Frank Jenkins, Mrs. B. C. Dennison and Miss Eva Burk halter. 5 Senior Circle The Senior Circle of the Com munity Congregational church held its regular monthly meet ing in the social hall on Garden Friday, with Mrs. A. A. Myers and Mrs. L. E. Henry hostesses for the afternoon. Following dessert at 1:30 o'clock the presi dent, Mary Eckstein, called the meeting to order. Mrs. E. G. Matthews, the Rev. - Godfrey Matthews and Mrs. E. L. Mit chell spoke of the work of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and the very pressing need for leaders before.-more troops could be organized. It was announced that the dormitory for servicemen in the upper room at the hall was about to be discontinued, due to the fact that the need had lessened and that the room is needed for church activities. It was also .voted that instead of money-making activities during the coming year those members who wished would make a pledge of a cer tain amount annually, the amount so raised to take care of church pledge and other expens es. Saturday, Oct. 27. 1945 Musicale An informal musical was held Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Hugh T, Mttcnelmore, wtien several of her piano pupils played for their parents and a few friends. Guild Meets LANGELL VALLEY Mrs. Maxine Brown entertained the guild of St. Barnabas church at her home Thursday afternoon. The meeting was in charge of President Edith Jones. A bazaar and chicken dinner is planned for November 29. The women are having a cement sidewalk and bridge put in by the church. j ouowing tne meeting sewing was done for the bazaar. Carolyn Dearborn was given a gift of tea towels. Delicious pie and coffee were-served at the afternoon's close to Eva Roberts. Edith Jones, Frances Dalton, Carolyn Dearborn. The next meeting of the guild will be on November 1, at the home of Mrs. Zelma Foote at Henley. It will be an all day meeting. At the short business meeting which followed the potluck luncheon of the Rebekah social club, held in the IOOF hall on Wednesday, plans were made for a rummage sale to be held November 17. Lina Motschen bacher is chairman of the com mittee in charge of the sale and the location will be announced later. Introduced as new members of the club were Annis Struthers and Joy Rolph. Catherine Brumbaugh invited the group to hold its November meeting at her country home near Olene, on November 26. . The November 13th meeting place will be announced later. Mrs. Luther Hasklns will be hostess at the November 4 meeting when Mrs. Will Wood of Klamath Falls will speak on, "Making Christmas Corsages."
