JtT' ml li'ilriri Ji Bfeocierfes Line Up For Series Seais DETROIT, Oct. 4 P) The 9-0 defeat the Chicago Cubs handed the Detroit Tigers in the world series opener yesterday didn't discourage the faithful bleacher ites today. An estimated 3000 were in line at 8 a. m. to buy unreserved scats at Briggs Stadium. Two women, Darleno Garneau and Mrs. Theresa Lucas, both of De troit, were first in line; they ar rived at the stadium at 8 p. m. Wednesday, with blankets, heavy coats, jugs of coffee and bags of sandwiches. Hundreds of other people spent the night In automobiles near the stadium. At daylight, when the lines started to fill, they left their cars and took tneir places in line. 8th Established Elbe Bridgehead Br NEA Service In the summer of 1944 a Ger man lieutenant general, his forces facing certain destruction on the coast of Brittany, decided to surrender to the Eighth In fantry Division. He was brought before Brig. Gen. Charles D. W. Canham, as sist a it t com mander of the Eighth, who stood with a group of armed Infantrymen. The German looked at General Canham and asked, "Where are i your credentials?" General Can- j ham motioned to his grim, dirty doughboys. "These are my cre dentials," he replied. When the Japs hits Pearl Har bor, the Eighth, a regular army outfit, was assigned to patrol the U. S. east coast. It sailed for Europe In December, 1943, and landed in Normandy on the Fourth of July. During the next 10 months it was responsible for capture of 316,000 prisoners, 250,000 of whom were seized when the Golden Arrows made a swift dash to the Elbe in April, establishing a bridgehead there and joining with Russian forces. The Eighth had its first combat at the Ay river in Normandy. It took Rennes, and proceeded to the siege of Brest.' The division moved Into the Luxembourg zone, fought in the Huertgen forest and pushed across the Rocr river. Landers, seaman, first class, USNR, of 2100 Altamont, Klamath Falls, has reported in at the U. S. naval armed guard center, after spending 12 months as a mem ber of a gun crew aboard a mer chant ship. ' ON DESTROYER ON THE USS JOHN D. HEN LEY IN THE PACIFIC Sydney N, Sheldon, yeoman, 3c, route 2, Klamath Falls, is serving on this homeward-bound destroyer, which is expected to reach a west coast port the last week in September. The majority of her crew is expected to get leave in October or November. A veteran of 18 months In the Pacific, the Henley fought at Saipan, Tinlan, Guam, the Pa laus, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and shortly before the end of the war, in the East China Sea. Kesterson, fireman, first class, Klamath Falls, on duty with standard landing craft unit 34, the boat pool here, can feel pride and satisfaction at news of the fleet's entrance into Ja pan, as the unit provided sup plies and did repair work for the fighting ships. The base, built despite ad verse weather conditions, haz ardous coral reefs and rugged shore conditions, was said to be the model of advance base con struction in the Pacific. REPORTS TO CENTER TREASURE ISLAND, San Francisco Donald S. Partin, gunner's mate, 3c. USNR. 315 East Main, has reported in at the U. S. naval armed guard cen ter, after spending 12 months as a member of a guncrew aboard a merchant ship. The armed guard center on Treasure Island directs the training and assignment of all officers and enlisted personnel of navy gun crews of merchant vessels in the Pacific. FREE Grems Roofing Service Phone HERALD AND NEWS THIRTEEN 26 Dogs Boarded At Pound During Month Twenty-Blx dogs were boarded by the Klnmath Falls city pound and kennels during the month of September and 14 were sold to new owners, Fees collected for these services amounted to $176.50, $36 of this was for dis posal of animals, $62 for board and $78.50 in sales. In addition to this money, $72 was collected for August activities, making a total amount of $248.50 received by the animal commission dur ing September. Eleven stray dogs and four stray cats were plckod up during the month, according to the re. port, and 18 cats, 18 kittens nd 17 dogs disposed of, .
