SIX HERALD AND NEWS Thursday, SapUmber, 13. 1I4J Services Reveal Plans For Freecl PWs, Internees Plans for liberated prisoners of war and civilian internees in the Far Last are being lormulat ed for their welfare by the Red Cross with army and authorities. a follows: Prisoners of war and civilian internees will be evacuated from Japan to the Philippines by air and water. Army units taking food, medicines and cloth ing will be accompanied By tsu American Red Cross workers. The Australian Red Cross will care for the British in Japan. The British dominion and Dutch military authorities have the same plan. In the Philippines the Ameri can Red Cross will maintain 24 hour service, keeping a central registration file, delivering mes sages and replies, staffing recrea tion centers, canteens and an in formation' service. The Red Cross will also supplement the army issue of comfort articles both at the present camps and at the processing centers En velopes and airmail stationery will be distributed in the camps and at the processing centers. Evacuated children will be cared for and cash grants given to those returning home. , - Liberation Messages Each United States prisoner of war and civilian internees in the Far East will be permitted to send a 10-word message via the war department to his or her next of kin immediately upon liberation. The provost marshal general's office will forward these messages by telegram, with the notification of libera tion to the emergency addresses of civilian internees, naval per sonnel and merchant seamen. The adjutant general's office will follow the same procedure for army personnel. Each person in the United States receiving noti fication will be authorized to send a return message via the war department to his or her re leased relative. When this reply is received, the prisoner of war or civilian internee will.be auth orized to send a second message to the same addressee, again via the war department. The emer gency addressees should follow exactly the directions given for this message sen-ice in the noti fication of liberation: This plan applies only to the United States prisoners of war and civilian in ternees. We understand- that there will be a plan for -the ham dling of message$ frxn prisoners of war and civilian internees of other allied -nations and as soon as any information'concernipg it is received, we shall inform ou: Mail to Prisoners . The war department -iias an nounced that persons wishing to write to liberated .prisoners of war a n d, ..civilian , internees should use the following address: Name of Addressee ""' ' "" (Rank and Serial 10. for mili tary personnel.).---v-- - i Liberated Personnel .Section, , APO 501, c'o Postmaster , . -x ' San Francisco Calif.', It is contemplated that . deliv ery of this mail will' be made either at Manila or. at other points through which the liber ated prisoners of war or civilian internees may pass en route back to the United States. Since Red Cross is no longer transmit ting the special messages on Form 1616 for liberated persons, the above information should be given to relatives and friends wishing to communicate with them. Mail to USSR Letter mail addressed to Ital ian prisoners of war in the USSR will be accepted for trans mittal through Italian diplomat ic channels. .
