TWELVE HERALD AND MEWS Friday, August 34. 1945 NAVYREVEALS PL ANE CRASH DAMAGE- TOLL m WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (P) flTho novy disclosed today that JJen men were killed, 85 planes destroyed end 55 others dam egcd when a four-cnBine navy 'bomber veered off a runway on iEniwetok atoll in the Marshalls August 0, 1944. " A Consolidated Liberator was poking off on a bombing and reconnaissance mission. Sudden ly it turned left and plowed into 3lanes assembled in a replace ment pool for carriers. Seven of the Liberator's nine 00-pound bombs began burning ror exploded as flames spread rapidly from the plane's 2900 gallons of gasoline. The navy said an investigating board found that the pilot "fail id to realize that the plane was airborne and failed to keep his plane's track along the center of the runway." The pilot was L. Before entering tho army in July, 1942, ho was employed as a trucK driver by the Associated Lumber company, Dorria, Calif. V CITED IN ITALY WITH THE FIFTH ARMY, Italy PFC Melvin V. Hunt er, Klamath Falls, recently was cited for outstanding perform ance of duly in Italy. He served on the fifth army front in the 91st "Powder River" division. His mother, Mrs. Gladys E. Hunter, lives at 4763 Climax, Klamath Falls. WINS BADGE WITH THE AMERICAL IN FANTRY DIVISION IN THE PHILIPPINES Pvt. Roy H. Glubrecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Glubrecht,' 701 N. 11th, Klamath Falls, has been awarded the Combat Infantryman's badge after serving through the bitter Cebu campaign. Veteran soldiers of Glubrecht's unit say the fighting on Cebu was tougher than anvthinir the America! division hit in it's previous campaigns at Guadal canal, Bougainville, and Leyte. The Klamath Falls soldier has been overseas six months and wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon, wnn one Dattie star, and the Philippine Liberation ribbon. with one star. ,c. VIRGIL COLUMBIA, S. C Lt. Don aid Leo Goldlng, USNR, of 833 North 11th, Klamath Falls, is stationed at tho University of South Carolina, on duty with tho Naval Reserve Officers Training corps unit there. He had previously been stn tioued nt the naval training .sta tion (Recognition) at Ohio State university, Columbus, Ohio, lor 16 mouths. Before entering the navv on August 31, 1942, he was an in structor at Klamath Union high school, Klamath Falls. Ho at tended Sumner high school, Sumner, la., and graduated from Coe college in Cedar Rapids, la., in 1929. He received his mas ters degree from Columbia uni versity in August, 1936.
