committed by his "double," de

"smoothest biittlme crooks."

Campbell, 57-ycar old former sc.

ually protested his innocence
when he was convicted of forg

Donovan said Thlcl had ad
mitted the forgery for which
Campbell was sent to prison,
and had lidded that ho tried to
help the Innocent man by com
mitting another forgery which
would prove that Campbell
could not have committed the
original crime.
This scheme failed, but netted
Thlcl $13,000, Donovan said.
Campbell, who lives in Floral
Park. N. Y., with his wife and
three children, plana to ask Gov,
Thomas E. Dewey for a full par
don, A friend of Campbell's read
of Thiol's nrrest In Lexington,
Ky., last March and noted the
striking resemblance between
the two men. All but one of the
witnesses who had testified
against Campbell admitted they
mid erred.
Thlel, also 57, was said by
the elil to be wanted for cash
lug forged checks worth $200,-1
000, lie was sentenced yester
day In federal court for forging
a $4000 check on a New York
bonk and having the funds
transferred to Boston, where he
maintained an account under an
assumed name.
