Saturday, July 21, 1945 HERALD AND NEWS THREE Marines Supply Downtown Clubs For 1100 Personnel For several months now, with out publicity or fanfare, the ma rines have been operating two downtown clubs for enlisted men which have greatly in creased the recreational and lib erty opportunities in Klamath Falls barracks personnel. One, the Enlisted Men's club on Ninth street, was opened al most a year ago by the Crater Lake detachment, Marine Corps league, to provide the marines with their own personal down town spot and to take the strain off already overtaxed civilian facilities. A good part of the original equipment of this club was do nated by the league or by civil ian well-wishers, while other fixtures have been purchased with club funds. For decora tions Sen. Marshall Cornett do nated several mounted animal heads and mounted Oregon wild fowl. Several months later, after all doubt had been removed as to whether the place would be suc cessful financially and other wise, the marines, through a board of directors, assumed re. sponsibillty for the actual oper ation of the resort. As the personnel of the bar racks and the membership of the club grew, lt was decided' to open a second spot, thli for',' staff NCOs only and to reserve),, the old club for men of the lst four pay grades sergeants, cor porals, PFCs and privates. The new Installation, opened' last April 1, is located In thaf Wlllard hotel and Is run along;:.' the same lines as the Ninth, street establishment. Membership is open only to? marines and naval personnol ot the barracks. Some 950 haver joined the enlisted men's club! since its inception last Augusfi and around ISO hold cards tar the staff club. I There Is only one major dirt fcrence In the i-ules governing. the two places. Women guests? are allowed to come to the staff resort each night and may com to the enlisted men's club only three nights a week. Both organizations are oper ated by an 11-man board ot directors headed by Sgt, MaJ. John Sallman, chairman. M. Sgt. William Phlpps is the active manager of the two clubs. , Have you increased your fir insurance in the last two years? If not, give it your Immediate attention.
