1 t '. I TEN HERALD AND HEW8 Wednesday, July 18, 1945 Nevada, Veteran Of Nazi Attacks, Slugs It Out With Japs WASHINGTON. July 18 (!) Veteran o two wars, the battle ship Nevada absoroect aamage from a flaming suicide plane and five hits from an Okinawa shore battery but stayed in the light. The navy today told the story of the actions which occurred as the famous old ship was oper ating as part of a formation as signed to obliterate enemy in stallations on the island, j. The kamikaze struck before daylight March 27, causing 60 Casualties, including 10 enlisted "men and one officer killed and JJO seriously injured. Despite her damage, the Nev ada was back in action within ;four hours. i The next week, on April 5, avhile still pounding away at Japanese airfields, shore de fenses, supply dumps and sus pected troop concentration points, a coastal battery opened fire. J The Nevada, which cracked .the toughest installations the aiazis could provide at Norman- riy, Cherbourg and southern France, slugged it out for 18 sminutes. During the engage ment the enemy fired an estimat ed 24 shells, five of which reg istered. They killed two men, .seriously injured eight, and lightly wounded eight others. '' Experienced gunners of the Nevada got off 71 rounds from sher 14-inch main battery alone, nd when the shooting was over, Jthe- navy said "the target area (resembled a gravel quarry after a week's blasting." ! The Nevada's damage was re paired overnight, and the next cmorning she was back on the firing line. ' In the kamikaze attack, the Nevada's anti-aircraft guns as sisted in splashing two of the attackers before a "Val" dive . bomber streaked out of the haze apparently bent on striking the jopen bridge. Light machine Jguns scored hits on the plane, abut too late to stop her. Hit at Pearl Harbor f Marine gunners of the 20 mm Jbattery, however, managed to n"saw off" the plane's right wing, -which fluttered into the sea. Its Jcourse diverted, the plane crash sed into the main deck aft beside a main battery turret. The seven marines who saved the ship's superstructure died at their sta tions, their guns barking until the second the plane struck. Fires started by the kamikaze crash were extinguished in three minutes, but not before consid erable material damage was done to the main battery turret and one 20 mm gun. It was the Nevada's first dam age since Pearl Harbor, al though she was "straddled" by German shore batteries during the bombardment of Cherbourg. At Pearl Harbor, she was the only capital ship to get under way during the attack. About 40 minutes after the Japanese hit, she cleared her berth unas sisted and started down the south channel. Heavily dam aged and drawing water, she was beached to prevent jamming the channel. After permanent repairs and modernization at the Puget Sound, Wash., navy yard, she returned to the fleet in time to participate in the reconquest of the Aleutians in May, 1943. She later was refitted at the Nor folk, Va., navy yard, and ar rived in European waters in April, 1944. to support the Nor mandy landings. She returned to the Pacific late last year after recondition ing again at the Norfolk navy yard. Her first new assignment was at Iwo Jima. Fresno Man Manages Goodyear Service H. A. Pavlat, recently of Fresno, Calif., has taken over managership of the Goodyear Service store at Eighth and Klamath avenue, succeeding V. J. whitey Goodwin. Pavlat has been associated with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company for the past five years at Fresno, and has been in the tire business for the past 13 years.
