STILL IRKING Young Forest Firefighters "On Job" fn Kamafh Woods RESPITE FIRE Slaughtering and curing oper ations have continued at tho Bratton packing plant on the Keno road without delay, in spite of fire destruction July 2. George Bratton, manager, said today. Although freezing compres sors were destroyed and the temperature in tho locker rooms reached 16 above zero the day after the fire. 1000 pounds of dry ice brought by truck imme diately from Ashland relieved the situation. Bratton attributed the suc cess of keeping the locker rooms below freezing temperature to dry ice and a 12-inch thickness of rock wool insulation. . The dry ice lasted- well the six-day period without the com pressor unit. Temperature reached 24 degrees above, zero as we nignest ourmg that time. A new compressor arrived July 4 and installing operations were completed Sunday when temperature in the freezing rooms was again reduced to zero. Food stored in the lock ers suffered no damage during the delay. Charred debris Is being cleared away now in prepara tion for constructing a new pack ing unit, to replace the building which was destroyed. Work on the new section will start soon, Bratton .aid. Hie fire wus spotted In township 33, range 71. section 2, in the forest above Fort Klamath. Another point of interest, this was the first experience In an swering a fire call by the majority ot boys at tha Fort Klamath camp. The call was received at 11:85 a. m. The boys threw down the watermelon they were eating, manned the equip ment truck and were on their way before you could bat an eye, W. C, Parker, in charge of tha camp, reported. The fire brought to light too, a strange tradition among youth ful fire fighters when, after the fire was controlled, notches were cut In points of deer horns. Many a first notch was proudly dis- filayed on a point swinging from he belt. Bob Lee was bragged by his, companions as lacking only one notch ot becoming an ace. It takes ten notches to become an ace. Lee is a second year fire fighter. On youth displayed a ringed point with three notches acquired this season. One for tho pack ing plant fire in town, ono for the recent Eagle ridge fire, and the. Friday fire.. Parker, a discharged Seabee, voiced - appreciation of the re sponse and cooperation ot the Fort Klamath group. A veteran ot three years and three months ot overseas duty with the C.B. battalion;"- Parker . spent two years In the South Pacific and one year. In Alaska. Mrs. Margaret Wntson, cook and house mother for the 17 boys, reported there was nothing wrong with their appetites. They consume five gallons of whole milk, seven loaves of bread be sides hot biscuits, In addition to quantities of meat, vegetables and fresh fruit per day, she said. Breakfast at camp Saturday morning consisted of mutton chops, fried eggs, hot cakes, fresh frult'and milk. The boys take their lunches to the woods where they work clearing brush and removing fire hazards. After work Is finished for the day, they take '.wlm and are ready for Mrs. Watran'i eve ning mcnl of meat, iiolntoos, gravy, vegetables and puUdlng, pie or coke. Each boy takes his turn help ing with the dishes, and clcunhig up camp. They have one tiny off per week to do as they like, and swim in all their spare moments. After studying the matter ot solicitations, tho retail trade committee of the chamber ot commerce has approved antl solicitation ordinances now in use In the city and recommend ed that they be strictly enforced. At present Klamath Falls has the Green River ordinance which prevents soliciting or ped dling In residential districts. This ordinance, which originated In Green River, Wyo., has served as a model for all soliciting or dinances throughout the coun try. An antl-peddltng ordinance Is also in use which- prevents the sale of merchandise In the business district when there Is an actual delivery of merchan dise at tha time of the sale. At the meeting of the housing committee a resolution present ed by the board ot realtors was discussed. The resolution Is a request that no further federal housing be planned for Klamath Falls unless something unfor seen should happen. This would not affect the 317 units now un der construction, but tho board of realtors fears that if more houses are built too many houses will be on the market when the present situation is eased.
