I NEEDS U MORE MEN TD MEET DEMANDS By WILLIAM E. LOWELL WASHINGTON, July 10 (P If present and anticipated de mands for lumber are to be met, the industry must have men and more men, Senator MltchelMD- wasn.i declares. Mitchell told a reporter the army estimates 500,000,000' feet of lumber will be needed to move more men and materials from the European theater alone. . War demands, he said, are still pressing; the industry is con stantly being assured that lum ber is a critical material but it still must scramble for labor with a score or more other In dustries, all on an equal footing as to priorities. , . He anticipated that postwar construction needs will keep the demand for timber production high. . ,.. Mitchell said he had sought war production board aid on the manpower problem and the shortages ot tires and heavy duty machine parts. War manDOwer commission records for the past five months show that about four per cent of employment service placements in 10 western states have gone into the lumbering industry, about six per cent into construc tion, a little over three per cent into mining. In contrast; 45 per cent went into manufactur ing activities, about 23 per cent into trades and services. ' ManDower records, incident ally, show that the trickle of veterans seeking employment fallows closely the larger stream of non-veterans, at least in the western states. - The records seem to indicate that unskilled or semi-skilled men take the first and best job for which they are qualified. . . In Oregon, for instance, In the five-month period, 11,231 non-veterans and 1208 veterans went into lumbering while only 38 non-veterans and 7 veterans went into mining. Oregon's lumber . industry far . over shadows its mining operations. A similar contrast, not quite so marked, was evident in Wash ington state and, to a still' lesser degree in California, where Job opportunities are more varied. ; ' If it's a "frozen'' article roil need, advertise for a Used 6nt in the classified. .-,.' -( Peterson Pleased By Action On Meat PORTLAND, July 10 (IP) State Secretary of Agriculture K. L. Peterson said today he was pleased by federal action allow ing meat slaughtered by lion, federal inspected plants in inter. siaie commerce.
