inning, West, marine outfielder,
was walked and then stole sec
ond, third, and home.
West, port-side el bower, hurled
for the Leathernecks against
Central Point and whiffed eight
batsmen; He gave up six hits
and walked six. Branham slapped-
out two bingles in three
times at bat to keep his batting
average well over the 300 mark.
Czyzewskl got three for four,

For Leone
Promoter Mack Llllard said
this morning that he was trying
to .sign some outstanding op-,

- Llllard has approached both
Jack "Buck" Lipscomb and Pete
Belcastro, two rugged maulers
In their' own right, but so far
the two gladiators are shying off
from a tussle with the Oyster
Bay terror. '
Leone is willing - to., tackle
either one of boys and Llllard
may succeed in signing one or

Leone's drastic methods have
proved to be very successful in
the Klamath area,- but he will
have all he can handle if either

It looks as if the Pacific Coast
Baseball league race will have
to be decided in future games
between the two leading teams
no other club seems able to
chew anything off the fattening
percentages of the Portland Bea
vers and Seattle Ralniers.
Both ' teams pounded out
doubleheader wins yesterday
the circuit leading Beavars
blanked Oakland 6-0 and 7-0 for
a 5 and 3 series edge while the
Ralniers trimmed Los Angeles
4-1, and 4-0 for a seven out ot
elgnt games margin.
Seattle's heavy edge over the
Angels pared Portland's league
lead to three and one-half
games, about the Irreducible
minimum in this year's race bo
twen the two northwest clubs.
Stars Get Hot
Tall-end Hollywood also won
botn of its Sunday games, beat
ing San Diego 6-3 and 10-5 while
San Francisco's slimline SpbIa
split with Sacramento, 7-0 and
1-8. Both Hollywood and Sac
ramento finished the week with
e-2 series margins.
Portland put its first game in
the cooler with a four run out
burst in the first inning with a
triple, two doubles, a single and
a hit-by-pttchor. Single tallies
were added in the sixth and
ninth frames while submariner
Ad Llska was holding the Oaks
to six scattered safeties.
Roy Helser turned back the
Oaks with two hits in the second
game while his mates were
pounding three hurlers for 10
hits and seven runs. This game
also was on the ice after the first
inning, the Beavers gaining two
scores in their initial turn at bat.
Pitcher s Duel
Seattle's 4-1 win in the opener
was marked by a pitcher's duel
between two 18-year-olds, Alex
Pallca and Ken Hicks. Palica
held the Angels to six hits, three
of them in the ninth when he
was faced by a short lived rally
which netted Loa Angeles only
one run after they filled the
bases with one out. Veteran
Hal Turpin handcuffed the An
gels with five hits and no runs
in Ute second gamo while Seattle
was converting IA hits into four
tallies.
Hollywood pulled up within
a half game of seventh place Los
Angeles with . its double win
over San Dlcgo, threatening for
the first time since the second
week ot the season to leave, the
cellar spot. '
Three runs In the seventh
sewed up the opener for the
Stars after they hud scored twice
in the first and once in the third
inning. San Diego threatened
with three tallies in Its half ot
the seventh but was held score
less the rest of the way. Four
San Diego hurlers failed to stop
Hollywood in the nightcap, al
though tho Padres tied up the
game at five-all in tho seventh
only to see the Stars bounce
back with five runs In the over
time eighth frame.
Joyce Wins No. 19
Bob Joyce, No. 2 hurler In the
league, chalked up his 10th win
of the season as San Francisco
won 7-0 In the opener at Sacra
mento. Joyce's win was his sec
ond shutout of the week. The
Solons came back In the rtlght
cao to sew up the tilt In the first
Inning with three runs, adriinv
four in the second and a final
one In the fourth while J"
Wood was llmlUnv t-e Seals to
