rOORTEEN HERALD AMD MEWS ThuridiT, June 38. 19 PACIFIC TASK FORCE BLASTS JAPS HEAVILY Br OLEN CLEMENTS ADAK, Aleutians, June 28 (Delayed) (A") A North Pa cific task force virtually wiped out a five-ship Japanese convey in the Sea of Okhotsk in the sub-arctic dawn today. The action, first reported In those waters, took place in clear weather a few miles south west of Paramushiro. Definitely sunk were a 2000 ton freighter, a smaller cargo ship and a large seagoing tug. Concentrated shellfire from cruisers and destroyers prob ably sank an additional small cargo ship and damaged an other. ." -i The Japanese ships were sur prised by a fast task force un der tactical command of Rear A dm. John Brown Jr., Washing ton, D. C, a former central Pa cific submariner who recently succeeded Rear Adm. John L. McCrea of Washington, D. C. . The attack was vicious. The Japanese could offer only inef fective fire from small auto matic weapons.. The American force suffered no casualties or damage. Al though it risked the possibility of aerial attack from Japanese planes based on fields through out the Kuriles, not a single enemy plane appeared. Naval units under the North Pacific command of Vice Adm. Frank Jack Fletcher had visited that area on at least three other occasions, bombarding Paramu shiro or Matsuwa. The Okhotsk engagement was the first surface action of any magnitude in the North Pacific smce the battle of the Koman- dorskies in March, 1943. Since the Japanese lost Attu and evac uated Kiska, they virtually have been driven from the North Pa cific However, they have been using the Sea of Ohkotsk. which is protected on the east by the Kuriles and is bounded by the Japanese home islands, soviet Kamchatka and Siberia, to sup? ply northern nunle garrisons, Forley Lauds Truman On Portland Trip PORTLAND, June 28 (IP) Former Democratic National C airman James J. Farley left here last night after expressing an opinion that President Tru man is a man with "an uncom mon lot of common sense." Farley praised the way Tru man took . over presidential re sponsibilities after the death of President Roosevelt, and said the -rountry was "united back of him almost to a man." The former presidential cabi net member was here in the in terests of a bevarage company which he now represents. DORIS NAMED MODOC OF DEFENSE GROUP Bailey Dorrls, prominent Mo doc county stockman, was named president of the natural resources committee of the Modoc defense council at a meeting at Canby Wednesday night. Dorris succeeds Harry Edger ton, Adin lumberman, who headed the group three years. New vice president , is Vinton Loveness. The Canby meeting was held at the office of Hy Brown, with the visitors guests of the 'Ralph L. - Smith Lumber company, headed in this area by A. B. Hood. Chicken dinner was served In the Smith cookhouse. The defense council's postwar planning committee held a pre mccting at which Ellsworth Scammon, of the California re construction and reemployment department, discussed the state wide postwar planning program. He spoke again at the night ses sion. The group reported a list of projects to be presented to the county supervisors on a priority basis for postwar work. Heading the list were the new public hospital, and Improvement of communications in Modoc county. Numerous other pro jects are listed. Scammon said that California expects to have a work force of 4,000,000 after the war, as com pared with 2.700,000 before the war. The figures, ha said, in dicated the necessity for ex pansion of employment-giving projects, both public and private. There was an active discussion of postwar planning and cur rent employment problems on farms and In the lumber In dustry.
