What Is this "green flash" at sunset sometimes mentioned? The green flash Is an effect not seen once in a lifetime by most people and several times by a very few. When the sun is setting over a distant horizon and seen through unusually clear air, Just as the last thin rim of the elobe is dlsnnoearini!. It will sometimes flash out for a second or more in the most gorgeous green imaginable. At times the trees along the horizon will flare with green after the sun is entirely gone. On other occasions when conditions seem equally perfect, no such nhe nomenon Is seen. It is a pris matic effect, and also occurs at sunrise. 2. In what part of tho sky do "moon rainbows" occur? This is another rare phenom enon. The present writer has ooserved only one. Many speak of the colored circles of rather small angular diameter often seen around the moon as "lunar rainbows." These are coronas and are due to the diffraction of light by water droplets in low clouds. Real lunar rainbows are caused by refraction and reflec tion, as are daytime rainbows, and are seen in the oposite part of the sky from the moon. In order that such a bow may appear, the moon must be very bright (at or near the full phase) and not very high in the sky;, a copious shower must be falling in the direction oposito that of the moon; and the air between the moon and the shower must be unusually clear. Then a splendid rainbow with all the prismatic colors of a similar daytime phenomenon, but not so brilliant, will span the sky in an entrancing arc. 3. When a thin new moon ap pears in the west, we may often see a darker portion filling out the entire circle. What causes this? This is due to earthshine fall ing on the night side of the moon, that part which is turned away from the sun. When the moon is "new" to us, the earth is "full" as 'seen from the moon. Tho earth's brightness is then about 40 limes greater than full moonlight is to us, so makes this side visible to us. Through telescopes, considerable surface detail may then be seen on- the moon. - , 4. How far out over the ocean may one see from the shore? IX there were no atmosphere to cause refraction and if the ocean were perfectly smooth, then if H is the height in feet of the eye above the shore line and D. Is the distance In miles to the water horizon, we may use this formula: i The square root of 32 H equals D. When H is five feet D is 2.74 miles; when H is 100 feet, D is 12.2 miles, etc. Re fraction of the air makes these distances about one-twelfth great er. The proud possessors of "stars and bars" help to form the solid foundation of a railroad's per sonnel. Because of their intimate knowledge of operating rules, equipment and facilities ... the many situations and problems they have met and solved . . . they are of tremendous assist ance to younger men. Among the 65,000 Union Pacific employes there are approximately 7,000 "old timers" representing all departments-r-with twenty "or more years of service. These experienced em ployes have, in a large measure, been respon sible for the enviable record maintained by Union Pacific in the face of wartime conditions. The transportation of many thousand trainloads of troops and materials over the-Strategic Mid dle Route, uniting the East with the West Coast, calls for the wisdom and cod judgment of mai turity coupled with the ambition and tireless energy of younger employes.
