kee victory to put his team back
in first place, a half-game ahead
of the Detroit Tigers, who split
with the White Sox.

weekend as Portland's lead was
pared to a game and a half
through three consecutive losses
at Los Angeles, Seattle swept a

back into third place with a
double victory over Oakland and
the cellar-dwelling Hollywood
Stars won twice from San Diego.
Angels Take Series

Sunday and gain two full games
on the league-leaders. Chet John
son and Joe Demoran teamed to
hurl the Rainiers to victory in
the 'initial tilt yesterday, while
veteran Hal Turpin blanked the
Seals in the finale. Five errors
by the O'Doulmen in the first
game aided in their downfall.
Through their Sunday comeback
the Rainiers took the series 4-3.

1939 season. Ferris tied the
American league mark of

Sox who won his first eight

Tigers Split With Sox
Dizzy Trout gained his first
victory in more than a month
when he pitched the Tigers to
their fifth straight triumph in
the opener against the White
Sox, 3-2, but he needed the help
of Hal Newhouser in the ninth.
Catcher Paul Richards h i t a
grand slam' homer for the Tigers
in the nightcap, but the Sox
came to life to pound three Tiger
tossers for 15 hits and a 9-4 de
cision. Pittsburgh's Pirates came from
behind twice to win two 10-in-ning
games from the St. Louis
Cardinals, 8-6 and 4-1, and take
over second place in the National
league, only two games behind
the New York Giants.
Homers in the extra-frames ac
counted for each of the Bucs'
victories. Babe Dalgren hit one
with a mate aboard to win the
opener, and Jimmy Russell du
plicated in the finale. Rip Sew
ell, in relief, won the first for
the Pirates, while Preacher Roe
went the route in the nightcap.
Braves Sweep Two
The Braves moved into sixth
place as Mort Cooper and Jim
Tobin defeated the Giants, 8-5
and 3-1, for the Braves' sixth
and seventh straight victories
and their ninth in the last 10
starts. Cooper won his fifth
without a defeat in the opener,
and Tobin aided his own cause
with a homer in the second
game.
Brooklyn, led by Coach Char
ley Dressen, who acted in the
place of Manager Leo Durocher,
handed the Phillies a 10-4 de
feat in the opener of what was
scheduled to be a doubleheader.
The game was halted after seven
innings by rain. It was th Phil
lies' 14 straight setback.
Cubs Rap Reds Twice
The Chicago Cubs moved into
the first division by taking two
from Cincinnati, 10-7 and 7-4, to
sweep the four-game series.

on Pimlico today, ready to bat
tle it out with Pavot and per
haps ten other thoroughbred
three-year-olds next Saturday in
the 55th running of the famed
Preakness stakes, certain to hnve
a gross value close to $90,000.

Willie Joyce gave the "smart
money" boys as well as Ike Wil
liams a beating at Madison
Square Garden last Friday night.
A 14 to 5 underdog, Joyce
whipped the NBC lightweight
champion for the third time in
their four meetings. He gained
a split 10-round decision in the
non-title affair after each had
floored the other in one of the
most furious last rounds in Gar
den history.
Before the fight, Col. Eddie
Egan, chairman of the state ath
letic commission, took cogni
zance of rumors that the "fix
was in." He warned Joyce and
Williams he would suspend them
If he detected any dishonest ef
fort. Afterwards he exonerated
both by visiting the dressing
rooms and extending congratulations.
