rWO HERALD AND NEWS Bj PAOL HAINES cm, three what s more, fm HAINES Promoter Mack Lillard Presents- Tonight at the Klamath armory. Mack Lillard, the head man of Gladiator s UUliy, will presem uiree mum torrid, scintillating, colossal, rassling tilts. And .A,,II Kb nratti' ffnnd. too. The hair-raiser of the night s card will pit Georgie Wagner, God's gift to women, against ueorges uuscur, the Adonis of the northwest circuit. With wild wimmen shrieking and the gendarmes ready to close in at any time to prevent mat mayhem, the two gougefs are ready to go to any and all lengths to put the chill to each other. Georgie states that he will guzzle his opponent with such prompt dispatch that it will hardly be worth Dusctte's time to walk to the ring and that Announcer Jack Franey had better be pre pared to put in a priority call for a wooden overcoat and a stretcher. One would expect Dusettc to be trembling like a turkey before Thanksgiving Day, but Georges seems to be notably free from worry at the dire threats of The Toast of the Coast. In fact, he savs Wagner is nothing but a big creampuff and that he is saving 'him for dessert to top off his dinner of horse shoe nails and thumb tacks. All this verbal baiting paves the way for much ill feeling between the two boys. In other words, they just don't like each other, so there! In the semi-windup. Antone Leone, an oyster free of pearls from Oyster Bav, N. Y., will attempt to continue his winning ways by sloughing Baby-face Klingman into oblivion. Leone has a method that is all his own to garner his victories. After peer ing balefully at his rival, he will drop to the deck on his knees and as his opponent eyes him questioningly, Antone will bring one up from the rosin to send his puzzled and hapless rival reeling across the ring. ... . , , , ,. . , We figure mavbe Leone is just downright fooling us and that u.kon. ha ii hrnueht nn down in the "dear old southland" among corn pones, grits and fried chicken, and that he learned his peculiar tactics from observing a possum in its native abode. J DREW'S ; MANSTORE T33 Main St. Headquarters for the Stockman for 26 Yean Boston, Cincinnati Move Into First Division Of Their Respective Leagues By JACK HAND Associated press Sports Writer Joe Cronin's Boston Red Sox and Bill McKechnie's Cincinnati Reds today qualify as the come back kids bv makine the first division of their respective leagues aner a rocky start. Boston rocketed into the se lect circle by copping 13 of 18 games during an extended Fen way Park stand and Cincy crept out of the dark regions wilh 11 wins in their last 12 starts. Neither the Sox nor Reds were considered pennant contenders last spring and their early sea son showings appeared to justify the experts' form charts. But with both leagues shaking down into wide open scrambles, both can be important factors. i Boston Meets Yankees Terrific Rain Sweeps Churchill Downs Track Racing Strip Turned Into Sloppy Mess; More Rain Predicted Today By CHARLES DUNKLEY LOUISVILLE, Ky.. June 8 () The breath-taking two min ute drama of the 71st Kentucky Derby unfolds tomorrow with the prospect of the first muddy track slnco 1B29 when llttlo Clyde Van Duscn wallowed to victory through splashing mud and water. A terrific rain swept Churchill Downs yesterday, stopping shortly aflor noon. It quickly turned the racing strip into a sloppy, brown-colored mess, fetlock deep In mud. Unless moro rain falls today, or tonight, the track undoubtedly will drain off, making it slow if not muddy. It has excellent drying qualities, Original Field May Be Reduced However, more rain is predicted today with the result that the original starting field of eighteen may be reduced to fourteen because of track conditions. Burning Dream, carrying the hopes of a fifth derby victory for the 85-year-old Col. E. R. Bradley of Lexington, Ky will not start if track conditions are unfavorable, Jimmy Smith, his trainee said. Two of the three Canadian nominees Fair Jester and Kcuilworth Lad, definitely will not go if tho track is off. Another doubtful starter is Jacobc, entry of Andrew Wright. Jersey City, N. J. Jacobe, received a leg cut in his last workout before leaving New York. His handlers were frantically apply ing flaxseed heat pads today in the hope of reducing Inflamatlon. 14 Certain To Go To Post This fourth war-time derby, delayed more than a month because of the ban on racing, will find an apparently certain field of 14 more or less sprightly three year olds struggling to the last mile and a quarter of Churchill Downs soil, come a fast track or mud, to present a reasonable facsimile of Whlrlnway'l 2:01 25 record 'for the event. Each will curry 128 pounds, will! the exception of the only filly in tho race, Mlsweot, which will have an allowance of five pounds. Three Horis Installed As Choices ,, The public has installed three horses as choices Hoop Jr., entry of F. W. Hooper, Jacksonville, Fla.; Col. C. V. Whitney's Jeep and Pot O'Luck, entry of Warren Wright's Calumet farm. Hoop Jr., winner of one division of the Woods Memorial at Jamaica last Saturday, turned in the most astonishing workout of all derby candidates, stepping a mile and an eighth in 1:31 33. Pot O'Luck gets consideration because of Trainer Ben Jones, who has saddled three derby winners Lawrln, Whirlawoy and Pensive, winner of the 1944 event. Giants Whin Bums Brooklyn lived 'up to all the bad things the writers said about them in spring training days by kicking the ball for eight errors in tossine one away to New York, 10-5. Van Mu'ngo was credited with his sixth straight, but was not around at the finish desoite his triple and single.
