Gorgeous slugged his way to a much-booed victory over Sneeze Achlu without once giv ing Sneeze an opportunity to use his highly famed sleeper hold on the armory mat last week. The crowd didn't like the victory for Its sympathy wag with Achlu, but Just the same it had to give Wngncr his dues he's a tough fighter. Paavo took on tough but harmless-looking Kenny Ackles for a semi-wlndup draw last week, but gave tho crowd a preview of his ability to take it when they went tho limit in a clean match. Ka tonen can get dirty, too If his opponent does and it is this quality that the fans hope will touch Wagner a lesson this Fri day. Longer Duck Season Eyed By Committee, Says DU Lengthening of the duck shoot Ing season from 80 days to three months is being considered ' by the congressional committee on Conservation of Wildlife Re sources because of the heavy in crease In the duck population since the middle 1930's or after restoration was started in the drought-wasted nesting grounds of waterfowl, it is re ported in Ducks Unlimited Quar terly. The quarterly quotes Chair man Robertson of the house com mittee, as saying thnt there are now too many birds, and that more liberal regional regulations are needed to meet local condi tions. Tho house committee also has considered a change in the duck stamp law as it applies to water fowl wlnlor refuges which en compass more than 3,000,000 acres in various sections of the country. Robertson Is of the opinion that these refuges, for the estab lishment of which America's huge army of nlmrods pay over SI. 000.000 each year in duck stamp fees, can serve a two-fold purpose oy allotting some areas for public hunting and others for refuges. It was not learned If this pol icy has any direct bearing on tho proposed opening of the Sheepy lake area In the Lower Klamath to public shooting. The proposal recently made to the Fish and Wildlife Service was for moving the public shoot ing grounds from Its present lo cation to the old natural gunning areas In the Sheepy lake region, WORK SHOES LOGGER BOOTS OREGON WOOLEN STORE Mila l lib but it was hoped by local hunt ers that the new policy might open both areas to public hunting.- , Birds using the Lower Klam ath resting grounds are largely the grain - feeding mallards, sprigs and baldys, on which the limit was raised last season to 13 birds. Seven straieht victories have rekindled Forbes field Interest that was redhot late last sum mer when the Bucs knocked St. Louis around the lot in a wild futile spurt. However, Pitts burgh fans still remember the 1938 folding job and are cau tious. Off-season gossip tabbed the Pirates as the Cards' most seri ous opposition and many "ex perts" went overboard on Frank ie Frlsch's chances of dethroning the Red Birds. But the club was almost left at the post, winning only two of its first nine starts against the Reds and Cubs, and floundering under tne .ouu mam until tne eastern teams moved west. After trimming New York in the second game of a Polo Grounds doubleheader May 20, the Pirates returned home and beat the Giants the next night, then took three in a row from Boston and have won two straight from New York in the current series. It took Frisch two days to win the second tilt from the leaders. Carrying over a 10-5 lead, in a "suspended" game of Sunday, the Pirates made It certain, 11-5, when they finished it yesterday. Rain saved the Giants from an other possible setback as Pitts burgh led 2-0 at the end of four innings and needed only three more outs to make it legal when the game was postponed. Brooklyn continued to fade, dropping a 5-3 tilt to Chicago and sinking into fourth place three percentage points behind Pittsburgh and the Cubs, tied for second.
