ARBOGAST WASHINGTON, April 24 The house appropriations com mittee tossed a handful of verbal brickbats and a 25 per cent bud get cut at the interior depart ment today. . .... Sending to the floor a $102, 602,628 measure to finance the department for the year starting July 1, the committee criticized many of the agency's activities and trimmed $38,743,419 from its budget estimates. However, the amount it rec ommended exceeds by .$4,480, 629 the funds made available to the department for the current year The increase, the commit tee said, was due to the necessity for furnishing reclamation proj ects more money to spur food production. , The committee's formal re port, prepared by a sub-committee headed by Rep. Johnson (D Okla.), a long-time critic of In : terior Secretary Ickes, expressed hope that within a few years the department's revenues would equal operating expenses. Its income next year was estimated at $74,500,000. The committee turned down a request for $1,072,000 to finance an Alaskan development study commenting that it would be of "little or no practical value." Good entertained with an Ital ian luncheon and stork shower for Mrs. Les Hearn. After open ing the gifts, the women spent the afternoon in sewing. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Mr. and Mrs. Cruikshank went to Keno Thursday to a dinner for Tom Tennery. The extension unit will meet Thursday, April 26, at the home of Mrs. Cruikshank. The meet ing will include short cuts on sewing. . The Regular Card club will meet in May with Mrs. Carl Fredericks. .The regional meeting of the PTA at Ashland was attended by Mrs. Good, Mrs. West, Mrs. Antle, Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Cruikshank from Camp 4. South Santiam Road Closed by Slide SALEM. April 24 W) The South Santiam highway, the Trans-Cascade route between Al bany and Bend, was closed late yesterday by a slide 60 miles east of Albany. The slide caused water to cover the road, making it un safe. The North Santiam highway, the route between Salem and Bend, is still open, although maintenance crews are having a hard time keeping snow off the road. DNB to Resume Short Broadcast Service LONDON. April 24 W The German news agency DNB, silent since 6 p. m. Sunday, an nounced today it would resume a one-hour skeleton service to newspapers still publishing in Germany by broadcasting night ly from 1 to 2 a. m. at dictation speed for morning editions. The Transocean propaganda agency station, also silent since Sunday, still has not been heard. Douglas County Rent To Be Controlled PORTLAND. April 24 P) Federal control of housing ren tals will be extended to Douglas county May 1, freezing rents as of last January 1, the district OPA office said here. Director McDanneU Brown said control will include rooms in private homes and auto courts. A fair rent committee has been functioning in Roseburg but jur isdiction has riot been extended beyond the city limits. Poe Valley Several of ' the farmers are having their cattle tested for abortion this week. Mrs. Bessie Holzhouser and son, Lorenzo, were shoppers in Klamath Falls from here on Fri day. The Holzhouser boys attended the meeting of the Elks lodge in Bonanza Friday night. Warren .Roberts hasn l been well for quite some time as a result ot a baa coia. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Freuer and son, Teddy, were callers at the Holzhouser home one night this week. Mrs. F. - E. Rodgers visited with Mrs. Joe Nork on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Buck Rodgers put up a new picket fence around their home this SDrine. which made the place look very nice. Margaret Freuer called on Lucia Webber on Thursday after noon. Mrs. Frank Sullivan enter tained some relatives in honor of her husband's birthday on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sullivan were callers at the home of Rex High on Thursday night. Clarence Webber is doing a lot of plowing this spring. He is plowing his own ranch and that of the Archie Roberts. Margaret Freuer sponsored a surprise party for Lorenzo Holz houser on Thursday evening. The affair was given at the Holz houser home. Holzhouser is leav ing for the service in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Norte were callers at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Nork on Fargo street while in Klamath Falls on Wed nesday. . 'Elmer' Rescued 600 Times By Naval Air Station Crew By E. T. BRITTON "Elmer" is rescued again! And who is "Elmer"? He is a very important personage to the mobile crash rescue unit that has been demonstrating fire fighting and rescue proced ure at the Klamath naval air station for the past two weeks. "Elmer" serves as the dummy victim who is rescued several times a day from the flaming cockpit of a discarded fuselage that is used to simulate actual crash conditions. Lt. (jg) M. K. Ray and six specialists F, who previously served as instructors at Bu Ships fire fighting schools, make up the mobile crash fire rescue unit that has been tour ing the 13th naval district since February 1. The purpose of this mobile unit is to explain and demon strate to the personnel connect ed with the fire and rescue work of each station the proper method of obtaining split sec ond control of burning wreck age and how to rescue a pilot and crew as fast as possible. The group is equipped with a Bean FFN3 crash truck with a built-in foam unit. It can pro duce fog by releasing water under 800 pounds per square inch pressure through special adjustable nozzles. Properly ap plied, fog will protect the cock pit areas from flames. They also have a LaFrance C02 booster line crash truck adapted to pro duce foam. It holds 320 gallons of foam. After demonstrations the per sonnel taking the course is al lowed to go ahead and practice under the guiding eye of the in structors. At the end of the five day course they are able to con duct a split-second rescue un aided. The crash gang operates as a team. Although all of them are trained drivers each has a spe cialized task to perform in a rescue. They all must be famil iar with the structural features of all types of naval aircraft. Especially important is know ing the location of gasoline tanks, escape hatches and the position of guns and other armament. In some of their practice runs the crew has had the water trained on the cock pit in 15 seconds after the alarm is sounded and in 27 seconds they can have the pilot rescued and the fire under control. The instructors are all former members of their home town fire departments. Lt. (jg) Ray is a former officer with the Evansvillc, Ind., fire depart ment Instructors in the group demonstrating here include John Kokoska Sp (F) 2c, (the leading petty officer) from Stan ford, Con n.; Arthur Vcntrice Sp (F) 2c, Bcrgenficld, N. J.; Howard Faulk Sp (F) 3c, Co lumbus, O., and Joseph Mackey Sp (F) 3c, Frank McKay Sp (F) 3c, and Jack Armstrong Sp (F) 3c, who are all from New York. There is always a pharmacist mate in attendance at the res cue training. Harold G. Dwcllc PhM3c ' has been assisting the unit here. Incidentally "Elmer" has been rescued over 600 times with no serious injury resulting to his benefactors.
