was awarded the Bronze Star for
heroic achievement in action.
He Is serving on the fifth army
front in Italy with the 13Sth In
fantry regiment, 34th "Red Bull"
division.

emy force, Griffin exposed him
self to intense muchine gun and

direct his men, Determined to
hold his hard-won ground, relat
ed the citation with the award,
Griffin skillfully adjusted nrtll
lory fire to within yards of his
positions to check the hostile on
slaught, His accurate fire directions
forced the enemy to disperse and
withdraw, in disorganized re
treat, then utilized all his weap
ons to further destroy the en
emy. His fighting spirit and

Hlbbard Jr., son of Mrs. Myrtle
Hlbbard of 402 Riverside, is a
member of the 7B2nd tank bat
talion, which la credited with
killing 1400 Germans, capturing
4B4 others, knocking out 11
tanks and disabling three others
and destroying 21 pillboxes, 41
vehicles and 64 guns.
Tho outfit, now in tho Apen
nine mountains before the Po
Valley, has been in tho line with
the fifth army about 300 days
since it was Indoctrinated in
battlo near Fondl, Italy, last
spring.
The tankers entered Rome
with some of the first allied
troops to reach the capital,

AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE
LIBERATOR STATION, Eng
and Harold B. Runnels, son of
Mrs. Leonard J. McKinnon of
22011 Union, Klamath Falls, Ore.,
hat been promoted from corpor
al to sergeant.
A gunner of a B-24 Liberator,
Sgt. Runnels has taken part In
bombing missions over Berlin,
Augsburg, Slegcn, and other war
production centers of Germany.
He is a member of the 446th
bomb group, which has complet
ed more than 200 missions
against enemy targets. The group
has participated In the eighth
air force's steady bombing of the
principal targets in Europe.
Sgt. Runnels has been award
ad the Air Medal, "for meritori
ous achievement In accomplish
ing with distinction aerinl opera
tional missions over enemy oc
cupied continental Europe. The
courage, coolness and skill dis
played by him In the face of de
termined opposition materially
aided in the successful comple
tion of these dangerous mission.
His actions reflect great credit
upon himself and the armed
forces of the United States." .

1044 Bismark, that their son,
Bob, has been promoted to the
rank of chief torpedoman, and

to the Massachusetts Institute of

Prior to returning to this
country a year ago, young
Schortgen spent 28 months In
the submarine service in the
South Pacific, and was at Pearl
Harbor just before the historic
attack on December 7.
His wife, Muriel, of New
York, is now living In Boston
while her ehusband is attending
school there.
