Torrance Heaps Praise On Baseball 'Br BUS HAM WASHINGTON, April 7 (IP) Baseball should be taken deep er into the ranks of our fight ing men, and deeper Into the hearts of our kids while they still are In primary school. Major Roscoe C. "Torchy" Torrance, vice president of thi Seattle club of the Pacific Coast league, brought those convic tions home from his experiences in the Pacific war. On lonely Islands, where rec reational facilities are scarce, baseball is a tremendous factor in keeping the boys going, says Torrance, athletic officer for the third marines at Bougainville ana uuam. Torrance isn't very high on the idea of having all-star teams entertain the men over seas. What they need, he thinks, is more equipment more of &i. opportunity to play themselves. It's the same way with the kids in this country . . . and organized baseball should pro vide diamonds or whatever else they may need after tho war for them "to play and not just watch." Torrance won the Bronze Star at Guam for meritorious service in directing an assault in beach operations under heavy enemy iiiuiiur ana artillery lire.
