Klamath, which has seen a tremendous growth in gardening In the war period, is asked to produce its share of 20,000,000 gardens set as the national goal for 1945. No one here has figured out exactly how many local gardens that means, but everybody who can get on a plot of ground, big or small, is urged to plan, plant, nurture and harvest victory garden vegetables this year. Victorv gardens are part of an all-out effort to produce food for war. That means food for our fighting forces, our allies under lend-lease, and our civilian population. Food production goals for some vegetables and certain food products are the greatest of all time. "There will be 35 per cent leas canned vegetables available to civilians in 1945 than in 1944. We are likely to need tremen dous quantities of food long aft er the war is ended, we cannot afford fo take a chance on not having enough. Better have more than enough, than less than enough." This statement was made by Marvin Jones, war food administrator at ine xva tional Victory Garden confer ence. The garden program is not a small one and is extremely im portant in the national food production picture. That small Slot of land, called the farm or ome garden and quite often worked by the women and chil dren, becomes one of the most important links in the national food program. The garden tract when planted, after following careful planning, will play an important part in resulting; in an adequate food supply, an ade quate diet and In general Better health for all lamuies growing one. Armed Forces Supply The armed forces and our al lies will be using such large quantities of food that we may not be able to get store supplies as readily as in past years and certainly the prices may be ex pected to be higher. When the supply of essential foods are in balance or above the demand the point values are usually re duced and Victory gardens have definitely, in the last two years, kept down the point values on many canned vegetables. It requires much transporta tion to distribute processed foods from where they are pro duced to where they are con sumed. Every pound of food produced In Victory garden and used where it Is grown re duces transportation congestion just that much at a time when every available ounce of our transportation force is needed for moving war supplies, aiding war industries an dfor moving troops. The Victory garden has a real place at the head of the procession in the all out war ef fort. The Victory garden pro gram is not limited to vegetable production. It includes fruits for the- home and the care of fruit trees in the farm home setup. - Locally one of the greatest mistakes made by beginning gardeners (some experienced gardeners) is to plant their gar dens too early. There are a num ber of hardy vegetables which can be planted early in April but experimental evidence shows that these same vegeta bles planted the last of April or first of May nave mane just as good a growth by July and usually are of better quality than the same ones planted April first. This is due primarily to the cold weather conditions and the fact that the soil has not warmed up to a high enough de gree to sumujaie acuw ccw ble growth. Two timely publications are available at the county agent's office. These are "Garden Soil Management" and "K 1 a m a t h Garden Plan." Suitable Vegetables and Fruits for Area Listed Trophies to Bm Awarded Donors PORTLAND, March 20 WV Gold and silver trophies will be presented to companies with the highest blood donor record dur ing each quarter period at the Red Cross center, the junior chamber of commerce said to day.
