EIGHT HERALD AND HEWS HUGE' FLATTOP SET IN MARCH NEWPORT NEWS, Va., March 14 yp) The largest Hat-top in the world, the 45,000-ton air craft carrier Midway, will be christened and towed into the James river from her giant building dock here, the morning of March 20. The Midway, which will be able to carry more thon 80 twin - engined planes, will be christened by Mrs. Bradford William Ripley, 2nd, of Dayton, Ohio, widow of a navy lieu tenant who lost his life in a plane crash in the Pacific, and daughter of James M. Cox, a . former governor of Ohio. Named after the battle of Midway, which occurred June 3-6, 1942, the new carrier is a sister ship of the Coral Sea, which will be launched this spring at the New York navy yard. The Midway was built at the plant of the Newport News Shipbuilding and drydock com pany, which is currently build ing another 45,000-ton carrier and which recently awarded con tracts for construction of two more. CHRISTENING Extra Gas Set For Victory Gardeners WASHINGTON, March 14 (VP) There'll be extra gasoline avail able again this year for travel to victory gardens. The OPA, announcing this to day, said applicants who have no alternative transportation may obtain gas for up to 300 miles of driving for a six-month period. This is the same allot ment as last season. This year, however, applica tions will not be approved if a gardener's plot is located more than 15 miles from his home or place of work. Otherwise ap plicants must have at least 1500 square feet devoted to vege tables and must show that the mileage is needed to provide necessary labor for cultivation. Any such object striking the fence breaks an electrical con tact, "setting up" signals miles down the track to warn trains approaching in-either direction. C, March 14 (Candian Press) Transport department officials yesterday completed a preliminary investi gation into the explosions aboard the S. S. THt HtOCUSSIVi UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD Local Drug Companies to Receive Penicillin Soon Local drug companies have been notified that penicillin will be available for civilian use after March 15. Previous to this announce' ment, penicillin has been avail able for military use only, ex cept in urgent cases where physicians made special requests to Dr. Chester S. Kcefer, gov ernment director for penicillin in Boston. It was flown to Klamath Falls from San Francisco upon authorization from Boston, on request of a local physician, sav ing the life o( a little boy last year. This drug, obtained from the green mold notatum penicilium, from which it derives its name penicillin, while being carried by local drug companies, will be obtainable only through doc tors prescriptions and adminis tered under direct supervision of physicians. Ho Oral Use While the drug is not yet be ing used orally it may very possibly be in the not too dis tant future, pharmacists sur mise. The Hillside hospital here has been getting 50 ampules per month. Now drug companies may secure 10 ampules per month from each wholesale drug organization. The culture mold is grown In about three weeks, and the first vial was produced for medical use two years ago. Since then 300,000 vials have been pro duced per year and now it is expected that 900,000 will be produced. Twenty-one govern ment manufacturers are pro ducing it. Restricted Before Because of the enormous quantity of penicillin being used by the armed forces there has not been enough produced to supply civilian demands also. Cox, secretary manager of the Willamette Val ley Lumbermen's association. Cox acted in behalf of a bill to case road restrictions and in contradiction of testimony given before a state senate committee by T. H. Banficld, highway com mission chairman.
