EN HERALD AND NEWS Thursday. March 8. 194S F QR RETURNS FROM VISIT AT HYDE PARK WASHINGTON, March 8 (iP) 'resident Roosevell returned to lav from a four-day visit to his gome in Hyde Park, N. Y., and ilmost immediately went into ronference with democratic con fressional leaders. Those calling at the White House were Vice President Tru man. Speaker Rayburn, Senate Leader Barkley and House Lead, er McCormack. The conference was under stood to be devoted mainly to the legislative situation. A full day of engagements was announced by Jonathan Daniels, administrative assistant, with 12 rangers who took part in the cap ture of the Cabanatuan prison camp in the Philippines being presented to the chief executive after the congressional confer- The rangers came with Gen eral Joseph Stilwell, chief p the army ground forces. - ' Engagements also were made for presentation of credentials by Baron Robert Silvercruys, new Belgian ambassador, and Senor Alberto Tachiani, the new Italian envoy. , ' , The president also scheduled a meeting with Maj. Gen. Pat rick A. Hurley, ambassador to China, and Lt. Gen. Albert C. Wedemeyer, American chief o staff to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek. Admiral William F. Halsey Jr., was invited to lunch with the chief executive. ' Announcement that the presi dent had returned from Hyde Park, where he arrived by special train last Sunday morn ing, marked a change of policy. - Rarely since the war began has his return from 'visits of that sort been made public. When asked the reason or the change today, Daniels said: "We felt that where security is not involved,' security should not be invoked. 1 - - "As we go along through the war we come to a point where experience has shown that, with out endangering the president, there can be some relaxation of rules that seemed essential be fore we had the experience." Daniels added, however, that the policy of not announcing presidential trips in advance will be continued.
