of Lakeview turned thumbs
down yesterday on a proposed
tax levy to pave the streets of
that town.
The balloting on a 24-mill tax
for paving purposes resulted as
iouows:
Yes 130: No 222.
Observers believed' the tax
was concentrated too heavily in
too short a period to win the
approval of the voters. The plan
called for a 24-mill ad valorem
tax for three years.
On January 12 of this year
voters of Lakeview gave the
town council authority to ex
ceed the B per cent limitation
on tax levies.

In Traffic Accident
A traffic accident occurred

smashed into the rear end of a

at the underpass on Main.
Rawllngs blamed the collision
on faulty vision, according to
city police. Rawllngs' vehicle
was damaged to the extent of
$100 and damage to the other
car was estimated at $20. No ar

SALEM, March 6 (A). The
bills to tax cigarets 2 cents a
package and to levy a 5-mill
two-year property tax to give
money for schools, and for build
ings for state institutions and
tho state board of higher, edu
cation ran into stubborn oppo
sition today from the Oregon
School Districts association.
The school directors oppose
