Stimson Denies Plans to
Release Men After V-E Day
WASHINGTON, March 1 (IP),
Testimony Jy vctornns admin

"without foundation" today by
Sccrolnry Stimson.
Stimson said in a stutoment
thnt the basic elements In the
war department's mobilization
plan were made nubile last Sep

Hlnes, testifying before the
house appropriations committee
recently, said "the war depart

from 200,000 to 230,000 men a
month" after V-E day.
Said Stimson:
"When hostilities cease In Eu
rope, tho wnr department In
tends to marshal against the
Japanese every soldier and
every Item of equipment that
can be used effectively to spend
our nnai victory.
This means, Stimson added,
that shipping priority will be
given to the transfer of men
and materials to the Pacific
ureas. Describing this as a
"tremendous undertaking,"
Stimson said that it must be
done "with all possible speed
nnd vigor or we will pay a
heavy prlco In the higher cas
ualtica of a longer Japanese
war."
Stimson added that all speed
consistent with the military
situation will be observed in re
turning men who can be re'
leased from the army overseas
"But," he added, "any sug
gestion that large numbers will
be coming home for discharge
Immediately after the fighting
stops in Europe can only lead to
cruel disappointment.
