Kaluli Olmstend of the uuency told a house committee In hearings on the fust 1045 de ficiency appropriations bill that tho cost of freight coualtzatlon on northwest apples since July 11M3. is estimated at S3.Z47.- 117. Chavez, opened the program, fol lowed by a pioneer number with tha seventh grado literature classes appearing in costume under thu direction of Mrs. t ostcr. A highlight of the program was a violin duet by two little second graders, Sharon Lea Lar son and Uarleno MeCJat. Both, children wore long, floor-length white frocks. Second graders from Mrs. El liott's and Alice Haldeman's rooms, appeared in a "February Uirlhday Coke" number, fol lowed by n verse choir honoring the birthdays of both Lincoln and Washington, and presented by Mrs. Griffith's third grade. A military drill by Mrs. Adamson's first grade, and numbers by the mixed chorus, directed by Mrs. Monroe, completed the fine pro gram. Principal Verne Spclrs has fol lowed a policy of naming a com mittee to present programs at Mills, Inrgest school in the sys tem. Teachers on tho committee were named nbovc. Requests for two hearings were heard by city councilmcn Monday night. One was In regard to the re quested vacation of Upham street between Johnson and Crescent, sometimes called Nel son street, and of Johnson street betwen Canby and Upham. The vacation was asked by owners of property along Johnson and Upham, who pointed out those were streets in name only, and that it would be impossible to construct roads because of steep inclines. Property owners wish to take over the property and landscape ii. i ney also lnlormed tne coun cil that in this way the land would bo put back on the city lax rolls. Mayor Ed Ostendorf asked if the matter could bo referred to a committee, and Councilman Rnllin Contrail moved that it be referred to the street committee to report back on. A hearing was sot for March 14 in the council chambers in regard to the sewer between the Big Basin Lumber company and the government canal, which has been reported to be clogged up and flooding land in that area. City Engineer E. A. Thomas reported to the council that con struction of a 6-inch line to re place a 4-inch line now forming a part of the privately-constructed sewage system would allevi ate the trouble. He said proper ty owners who would benefit by the construction could be as sessed the cost, and reported that If Uie owners agreed to pay cash, the outlay would be about 75 per cent less than that required if legal proceedings had to be instituted to assess the cost.
