Newspaper Page TextPACE TWELVE- HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON October Bureaucrat Defined By Bid die; Bricker Speaks in Montana Wounded By The Associated Preis Declarations by republicans that what they term "the new deal bureaucracy" is strangling people's rights have drawn a re ply from Attorney General Bid die defining a bureaucrat as "a man who holds a job in public life that a republican would like to have." Yesterday Gov. John W. Bricker, the republican vice presidential nominee, told Montana crowd that the federal Government now is marked by disorder, and confusion." He added: "The dead hand of bureau cracy must be taken off the neck of the people." Biddlc supplied his definition of a bureaucrat to a meeting of the New Jersey State Federation of Labor at Atlantic City. He said "communism is perhaps the Biggest red herring smeared across the political trail, "but there are other red herrings too a lavorite republican war cry .... is bureaucrat. ' Bricker traveled on into Wash ington state today, for speeches at Spokane and Wenatchee, after a speech last night in Great Falls, Mont., where he said Presi dent Roosevelt . had exhibited "violent antagonism to veterans legislation." Today also brought the funer al of Wendell L. Willkie, 1940 republican presidential nominee, -SATURDAY- Midnight to be attended by the 1944 choice. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey in New lorK uiiy. Publication of a pamphlet "An American Program" by Si mon and Schuster, Inc., showed that its foreword was an appeal by Mr. Willkie for the voters to demand that candidates make 'meaningful statements on our international obligations and our attitude on racial minorities. There are signs that his death may intensify both republican and democratic efforts to culti vate the independent vote. Both sides agreed that much of the Willkie following was in this category. Senator Hill (D-Ala.) told Washington reporters that the fact that Willkie did not an nounce for Dewey "might make his followers feel that he was against Dewey and that they ac cordingly should support Roose velt. ' Senator Willis (R-Ind.) told these reporters, however, that Willkie might have had some in fluence on the election had he lived but that his death, if it benefitted either party, probably would help Dewey "a shade" by removing the threat of a possible party bolt. f Dewey declined to comment on Secretary of State Hull's re action to reports in the New York Times, Herald Tribune and Daily News that there are indi cations Dewey, if elected, would ask Hull to stay on with the new administration. His aides had called the reports "purely specu- j lative." Hull said: My support and lovaltv hp. ! long primarily to the govern- i ment and its present official head, President Roosevelt. This will continue to be my attitude."
