By JOE REICHLER

' s'Jf baseball history repeats, the
Jjetrolt Tigers, who surged into
fijjst place yesterday, should win
the American league pennant
this year.
The Dresent scramble is fol
lowing the identical pattern of
the closing days of the furious
faces of 1908 and 1940. On each
occasion, three teams came roar
ing down the stretch neck and
neck with only two games sep
arating them. On each occasion
the Tigers finished lirs-
v The 1908 Tigers took over
first place on September 27 and
did not clinch the pennant until
the last day, October 6, when
they defeated the Chicago White
Sox, who dropped to third, one
and a half games behind. The
Cleveland Indians were second
a Jialf-game away. In 1940, De
troit moved to the top on Sep

nant on the third from the last
day of the season. Again the In
dians wound up second, a game
behind, while the New York
Yankees finished third, two
games in the rear.
?Not to be overlooked is Ihe
important fact that Detroit
jumped to the top on Sunday by
beating Cleveland twice without
naving to use weir pair of aces,
Dizzy Trout and Hal Newhouser,
Who have notched 49 of the Ti

Gentry had a nohitter for eight
innings in the nightcap, yielding
a pair of safe blows in the final

Rudy York and Dick Wakefield,

The Pelican varsity took on
the second string eleven Satur
day morning at Modoc field in
a warm-up game for the forth

The boys showed up much bet

when they had the ball and it
was obvious that the offense
will need plenty of polishing

up before the opening contest
with the Portland school.
The varsity won the ball game
14 to 0, but there really wasn't
a great deal to choose from be
tween the two teams. The reg
ulars scored a safety in tho first
quarter when Jerry Hicks was
trapped behind the goal line by
Tom Bessonctte after receiving
a bad pass from center, and just
before the half ended Bill Abbey
chucked a pass to Rolllc Berry
in the end zone for six points.
Jim Palmer's attempted place
kick was made.
The first string scored again
In the third quarter when players
recovered a fumble on the re
serve's thirty yard line, and
with Bob Perkins and Bud
Biehn carrying tho mail, Biehn
drove over for the final count.
Perkins' pass to Berry for the
extra point fell short.
One bright feature of the
game was bunting. Both Hicks
and Abey got off some nice
kicks, and it seems this is one
department Coach Marble Cook
won't have to worry too much
about.
The boys showed plenty of
scrap and another week of
rigorous pracicc will make a
lot of difference in the club.

The- Pelicans were still in

considering it was their first test

be well for the boys to set it out
