ACE EIGHT HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Yanks Take On A's Today In Only Game of Flag Race Bengals Will Roar Into First Place -If Mackmen Trip Pace-Setting Yanks By JACK HAND Associated Press Sports Writer Connie Mack's lowly Athletics put the chill on Detroit all season long, winning 10 of 19 from the pennant contenders, but Tiger town today was 100 per cent be hind Philadelphia as the A's tangled with the Yankees in a resumption of American league competition. If the Mackmen, a step out of the cellar, in seventh place, can trip New York, Detroit would vault into the lead by .008. The HIBHELB By PAUL HAINES The Pelicans displayed a ver satility of attack in their work out yesterday that boded ill for the Grant Generals when they come marching down from Portland to do battle with the Klamath horde next Friday. . Berry rifled passes through the air with deadly accuracy and Bud Biehn shot through the front ranks of the defensive squad like a bullet. The eleven operating on de fense resisted valiantly but were out-maneuvered by the attacking, force as the drive was deployed from one flank to an other with substantial ground advances. If the Klamath attack is as successful against Grant it will not be surprising if the Gener als find themselves demoted to the rank of buck privates after the fray. ; The softball tilt this after-, noon, which will find the marines from the Barracks en deavoring to sink the sailors of ,the naval air station, should be a honey of a ball game. Both tens have plenty of talented material to draw from and it will be a case of Katie bar the door and the devil take the hindmost when they get to gether. The main mat go at the arm ory Friday night will be a rug ged affair. Paavo Katonen, the Foxy Finn, likes to have that title belt where"he -can put-it on, and not around the waist of the Vancouver Viking, Jack Kizer. Kizer Jfeels the same way about the whole thing only vice versa so, as they can't get together, Paavo must toss Jack in order to force him into a belt battle. Today's Gsmes New York at Philadelphia. Only. game scheduled. Yanks-Athletics tilt was the only game scheduled from Monday to Friday but they were due for two more in New York over the weekend while Boston played Washington, St. Louis entertain ed Chicago and Detroit visited Cleveland. American league teams, think ing of the world series, took heart from the Cardinals' contin ued slump as the Red Birds drop ped a doubleheader to Pittsburgh for their ninth defeat in their last 13 starts. Attendance figures reflected the tightness of the flag chase with New York showing the way at 727,385 and the entire league drawing 4,185,000 customers. De troit was second with 648,642 and a cinch to take the lead with 14 more home games to two for the Yanks. Rain washed out Cincinnati at Chicago and Philadelphia at New York doubleheaders in the Na tional after the Phils had taken a 2-0 lead in three innings of the opener. Boston at Brooklyn also was postponed. The Cardinals fell before the Pirates' Fritz Ostermueller, 5-3, in the first game and then drop ped the nightcap, 6-5 as Preacher Roe took the decision over Bud Byerly. Bobby Doerr Will Change Uniforms At Gold Beach EUGENE, Sept. 13 (JP) Bobby Doerr, second-baseman and lead ing contender for the American league batting championship, passed through Eugene today en route to his "winter home" at Illahe on the Rogue river for a few days of fishing before re porting to his draft board. The member of the Boston Red Sox, now. in the thick of a four team race for a spot in the 1944 world series, said he had heard of no change in the plans of his draft board and would report at Gold Beach, September 19. He assumes he will be sent to Port land and from there to Fort Lew is, Wash., for induction. He was rejected from military service last June because of a perforated ear drum, but was re called by the examining board which declared the perforation cleared up. As far as he knows he still has the ear trouble, and has had it for the past 20 vears. However, he is ready to serve his country at arms if they want him. Doerr, considered by many Daseoau experts as the best second-baseman in modern baseball, regrets to miss the present dog fight his Boston club is now en gaged in. His present batting average is .325, a mark that may or may not stand . Two teammates, Pete Fox and Johnson are -potential winners of batting honors and he is pulling for both of them. - Doerr set a major league rec ord last season for the number of games played and chances ac cepted without an error, and was the. batting hero .of the 1943 all-star game.. . ... - .-..
