CoacAes Striving to Win Positions on Marine Team Two coaches are working hard cfuring practice sessions this week for playing positions on the Marine football team, now being whipped Into shape at the A I tu rnout junior high field. w Capt. James Higgins, line coach, and Capt. Roy Walters, backlield mentor, are endeavor ing to get into shape for active play and to keep from being edged off the squad by other aspirants for the positions. Captain Higgins, 240-pound former Chicago Cardinal pro guard, is fast for his size, and football-wise, and would be a natural to build the line around. Captain Walters, one-time Fur man university star, is in the running for a backficld berth. Others showing up well in practice are Staff Sgt. Tom Mc Clure, formerly of Washington Stale; Sgt Tom Chance, south paw passing expert; Cpl. William Salvador!, 235-pound plunging, passing, punting fullback; a slashing, 200-pound tackle, PFC. Joe Fiorc, and Sgt. Harry Golden, trying for center. Arrangements have been made for the marines to use the Alta mont field for nractice on Mon day, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and the fairgrounds on Tuesday and Friday. Lt. The Bearcats scored first in the third quarter on an 81-yard drive spurred by dashes of 28 and 24 yards by Fullback Floyd Simmons and Halfback Don Ro chon. Willamette threatened twice more in the last period, but it was not until the final 30 sec onds that Simmons was able to break loose on a 14-yard sprint to the goal line, climaxing a 38 yard drive. Sept. 11 P) Men who made the weary trek along golf's summer trail were on their way home today all except the Gold Dust twins of the fairways, Byron Nelson and Harold (Jug) Mcbpaden, who have earnings of more than $60,000 in war bonds to show lor participation in 20 tournaments. Nelson ran his winnines to $39,344 the all-time, high for one year by grabbing off first place here yesterday in the sec ond annual Texas Victory open. McSpaden was runner-up to make his total $25,200. The next tournament for the professionals will be Portland. Ore., November 23-26, this mark ing the opening of the winter tour. Ban Antelope Hunting Upon Navy Request PORTLAND, Sept. 11 (JP) Bans on antelope hunting in a 200 square mile area in Lake and Harney counties and fishing in Davis lake near Bend were imposed by the state game com mission over the weekend. The hunting closure was made at the request of the navy, which is using the sagebrush waste for aerial bombing prac Officials said the best antelorje hunting is outside the closed area which lies east of a line through the middle of the Hart mountains. Bend sDortsmen asked the lake closure. The water is so low the lake can. be waded in most places and fishermen have been gaffing trout, they reported. An investigation of nossible fish hatchery sites to offset losses expected from construc tion of the proposed high dam on the Santiam river was ordered at the request of the Salem Isaac waiton league chapter.
