Fourteen year - old Walter Kceney, of Junction City went down while swimming in the Calopoola river. A companion, Alvin Smith, tried to rescue him, then ron three blocks for help. Enlistment of WAVES in Oregon reached a new high mark for 1944 during the month of August, reports Re cruiting Specialist Dan Schrei ber of the Klamath Falls navy recruiting station,' which hand les WAVE applicants in this area.-; ;'.,: ...... Oregon Is contributing a sub s t a n t i a 1 part of the 4500 WAVES enlisted each month in the nation. Approximately 82, 000 WAVES are now on duty, replacing many more than that number of trained men for service on fighting ships. Scores of Oregon WAVES have the top jobs in the various units and approximately 40 Oregon enlisted women have been pro moted from the enlisted branch and have been selected for ad vanced training as officers and commissioned as officers. Eligible young wo rn en are urged to call at the local re cruiting station for further in formation about tho WAVES. Bishop Cannon Dies In Chicago Hospital CHICAGO. Sept. 6 VP) Bish op James Cannon Jr., 79, Metho dist churchman who gained na tional prominence tnrougn nis work for the defeat of Alfred E. Smith for the presidency in 1928. died today in Wesley Mem orial hospital: The bishop had come to Chi cago for a meeting of the Anti Sal loon ieague, an organization in which, he was active for years. He became ill last week and was removed from his hotel to the hospital.. The in crease is retroactive to Septem ber 1, 1943. Extension of present evening and night shift differentials to the traffic department, and din ing service employes and pre mium pay to clerical and office employes and promotional in creases to clerical employes, also was approved. The board refused approval for an increase of 50 cents a week in evening and night shift differ entials. . !' . . 4 The agreement covers : em ployes in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and north ern Idaho.
