Aug. 31 (Pi Mrs, Julln Culumbo'i life ended last night and with It one of tho tendered deceptions ever en acted In this capital of make believe. She was tho 78-year-old mother of Russ Col umbo, handsome crooner and film actor. She died still happy In tho belief that ho WBB winning ever mnm liimi, abroad mercifully unaware that Hi-iumy ne nimseil died a decade ago. Russ was killed September 2, 1034, then 20 and at the crest of a career as a night-club singer and film actor, Ho and friends were examining an old Civil war cup-and-ball pistol, believing it unloaded. The weapon dis charged, and tho bullet struck him in the brain. His mother was too ill from a heart aliment to be told of his death. So each week she received a Ictler from "RSS." Actually it was written by her husband, Nicholas, or one of Ihe other four children Tony In Phila delphia; Albert, John and Mrs. Carmcla Tempest here. Tho missive would be filled with newsy accounts, tender ventimcnts. reports of his suc cesses abroad, and regrets that ho was still too busy to return for a visit, Once a month the letter con tained a chuck for $308, sup posedly from Russ. It waa the payment lo her from his insur ance policy. Tho deception waa continued after failing eyesight narrowed her little world. Her husband died two years ago. Record Amount of Road Work Done More general maintenance and improvement work has been ac complished on county roads this summer llian in previous years, reports Walley Hector, county engineer. Eighteen miles of road in the vicinity of Klamath Falls have been resurfaced. The Poe valley road has been straightened in places and has received a now surface. Stretches from Allnmont drive to Summers Inno and along Summers lane from Johns avenue to the poor farm have been oiled, and a lot of work hns been done on roads in the Fort Klamath area. ouiic at Lake o'-the Woods last weekend. The officers and per fonnei camped at Willow Springs fored camp In the lake area. craving nere at 4 p. m. satur day, Ihe group arrived on sched ule nnd immediately set up shelter tents for the temporary camp. Lt. Anderson, acting as mess' officer, together with Corp. A. B. Epperson and PFC Leonard Sechorn, acting as a mess detail, had left Klamath Falls two hours before the company's departure and had the evening mess ready to serve when camp had been set up and properly policed, The mounting of an informal guard waa a novel experience for many of the men who had never before taken part In an actual ceremony of this nature, and those who walked post until 6:00 a. m. Sunday as part of the guard detail have a better under standing of what is required from them to insure camp secur ity through the dark hours of night. Reveille was sounded at 6 Sunday morning with assem bly 10 minutes later. Policing of the camp, and especially the company street, was engaged In by (he enlisted personnel, after which Capt. MacDonald formed the company for setting-up exer cises. Breakfast, consisting of cantaloupe, fried bacon and eggs, buttered toast and jelly, and stcaming-hot coffee was served at 8 o'clock. Nine o'clock found the com pany In formation with rifles and (ull field packs on their backs, after striking camp, ready to start out on their prac tice march of eight miles, during which approach marches, deploy ment of men and other tactical problems were practiced. The company returned to the camp site at 3 p. m., every man having stood the march in excellent shape, and after enjoying a cool plunge in the lake, they were served hot coffee, sandwiches and potato salad by the mess detail. The trucks were again loaded and the company entrucked for Klamath Falls, where equipment was checked in at the armory and the company was dismissed Trucks to convey the troops to and from the scene of the bivouac were furnished through Ihe courtesy of the California Oregon Power company and Pey ton company.
