PACE SIXTEEN HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH . FALLS, OREGON NELSON TELLS INDI SHORTAGETALK WASHINGTON, Aug. S4 (Jf) WPB Chainnan Donald M. Nel- ion' was disclosed today to' have told senate investigators that Lt. Gen. Brehon Somervell com' plained of manpower shortages on the eve of a recent cutback in airplane production that re leased thousands of workers for other jobs. Although acknowledging the need of men to meet expanded requirements of specialized items, Nelson said in his testi mony last week before the sen ate war investigating committee that virtually all critical muni tions programs "are being met." He added that the-remaining problems would not be solved "by letting loose a blunderbuss against the- whole manpower situation or by general edicts and broad limitations on the use of labor." ' . Testifying that the airplane cutback would solve the man power situation in the forging industry completely,- the war production chief said the army had anticipated the cut back " for three months. . i He added that when- Somer vell, chief of the . army's serv ices of supply, was talking with War Mobilizer James F. Byrnes "about the great shortage of manpower, and so forth,' I told General Somervell, .'You- have an airplane cutback coming soon, probably next week'." - Asked by Senator Ferguson (R-Mich.) how he reconciled tHe manpower shortage statement and the subsequent cutback an nouncement, Nelson replied: "We just don't, sir." .. Release of the testimony also disclosed a statement from Nel son that he is not kept informed as to military reserves at the front. . 'There are no figures avail able to us at all," he said. "Once they leave storage in this coun try, you have no figures avail able as to what the reserves are." While his testimony was be ing made available on Capitol bill, Nelson spent ah hour with President Roosevelt . in . a , fare well conference' before his, de parture on a special mission' to China. SALEM, Aug. 24 .). The state .department paid out $29, 074 from the motor vehicle ac cident fund in the year ended June 30. ' The fund was created by the 1941 legislature to pay for care of indigent accident victims, and was financed by a tax of 25 cents a year on each motor vehicle driver. : . ' Claims paid In the past fiscal year, include $27,173 to hospi tals, 51805 to doctors", and $95 to ambulance companies. There is a balance of $209,320 in the fund. 4 I'.IS P.M. Ramey Stein and Howard Pernell of the S. P. ticket office called for commun ity assistance, and, by the time the train arrived not only maga zines but fruit donated by Car ter's was ready for distribution by , the Commandos to the wounded men on the train. The announcer emphasized that it wasn't just the fruit and maga zines,, but the pretty, smiling girls,, that brightened things up oh the hospital train as a result of the stop at Klamath Falls.
