PACE TEN HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON . EXPERIMENT STATION TO BE INSPECTED Farmers and business men of the Klamath basin will have an opportunity to. vjew experi mental worn ai me lutuwui experiment station Friday, Au gust 4. All interested people are asked to be at the buildings on the station at 2 p. m. From there a trip will be maae nround the 90-acres comprising the station -to view the differ ent crops now being grown. Also, one o ( the important things will be changes occur ring in the land during the sev eral years the station has been in existence. This land is Class V excluded from the district as unable to pay taxes, and much of this is now in excellent pro duction, while other portions are being rapidly improved.- Some of the tilings to be seen will be onions and carrots be ing grown for seed; variety trials of both spring wheat and oats, creeping alfalfa, and other interesting crops. One of the most important is the series of large plots planted to . winter barley and winter wheat. This grain was planted - October 1 and much of it is now ready for harvest. This is the third year for winter barley, excellent yields being secured each year, with practically no winter kill ing. This is important in Klam ath county agriculture as It seems to offer possibilities of growing a good fall-seeded grain crop on land that will not produce good spring grain, and makes it possible to smother weeds, take off the grain .crop early in the fall, thus increas ing chances of securing a good stand of clover in the grain stubble. The trip about the station will require two to two and a half hours and will be time well spent. A. E. Gross, super intendent of the station, has many other things such as pas tures, different kinds of grass es, etc., recommended for this area, that will be viewed on this trip.. Swim Attendance Shown In Report Eighty-five servicemen and 664 civilians participated in the adult . swimming program dur ing July,1 according to a report submitted to the city recreation committee. Money taken in during the month for admission charge and : suit and towel rental amounted to $418. Expenses of the com mittee totaled $292.24, leaving a Balance ox $izo.7t. So I took tne carrying case off mine, wrapped the ma chine up in loose wearing ap parel and' parked It in my foot locker--which is still 'AWOL. But I think I've almost caught up with' it.- Meanwhile we've learned mat we are permmeu to bring typewriters with us to this theatre, the E.T.O! Oh. well, I'll be glad to see it, even with out a carrying case. ' . I'm on a clubmobile, and so tickled-1 keep pinching myself to make sure it's true. 1 was ter rified I'd eet in a club .where you have to plan programs and things that I know nothing about. On a truck, they serve only doughnuts, coffee and cig arettes. ...... Truck Roves Steadily . , We cover several camps and airfields a week, travel, around a lot, meet lots of people and get transferred about every three months. Our day goes something like this: .'- The truck a . big converted bus with an English 'driver picks us up at 8 a. m. and we drive to a camp where we .hook into the mess hall and start mak ing doughnuts an art which I suDDOse I could live without ever having learned, but not too dull. You use a prepared mix and beat up about 15 pounds of it with water and, boy, is that heavy going! and then dump it in the machine and it comes out doughnuts. Anuizing, really!-. Hungry tin -. Sometime - during the morn ing, you make 45 gallons of cof fee and then a horde of hungry GI's comes along and in about two seconds flat consumes it all and you start in all over again. Obviously, the. truck is narrow, and there are four of us, and always at least 50 soldiers mill ing around washing cups and braiding dough in your hair and swiDine sugar and scrubbing the floor :and being, useiui or play ing the JuKe pox. .-.- ,- ,; Need I add. that all -is con fusion? ' - . . -. as we don't, scald to death more than two a day we figure It I all right. We never know quite wnere we will De, oecause spe cial things are always coming up, and so there is no -chance to become bored. . - Like- the: other night, when we served after Glenn Miller played at one of the camps, or we bid some of the boys fare well, or something. Miller was quite fun. We all packed into a mammoth hangar to listen to him and then handed out doughnuts and coffee and sat. around and gossiped until all hours. Usually, though, we are home around 6 p. m. Mrs. Harrison has a wonderful tea waiting for us at 6 and dinner at 8. We eat lunch either at an enlisted men's or officers' mess and dinner, too, if we're late. Our house also is right next to a camp, and - we can eat there if we want to go out before 8 p. m.- ' To Danca in Jmo I went to my first dance Sat urday night with a very nice captain who is tne doctor at our camp. We drove a jeep through the fog and the blackout, and altogether had a merry time. I was the only American girl there, looking very alluring in my dirty uniform and mi-neei-ed shoes.' Will I be glad- to see those. pumps in my foot locker! On the other hand, the less I have to fool with the easier it Is, since our unit' Is extremely mobile. . : . . It's funny here so many, men you have at least 16 dates per week and most of the time would rather go home and read or to bed, because you spend the day exuding charm combined with a liberal sprinkling of doughnut grease. No justice! - Brats Hat Rebuked After a day or two, you know maybe eight- people, but all the rest' look' alike,' and I'm as likely to dump raw dough in a col onel's lap as in a GI's. Like the other day when someone was carefully sculpting dough around the cutter, and I yelled: "Look, chum, you do that once more and I'll brain you" and he turned around, revealing a STAR on his shoulder! He quit, too, by George! And cleaned it up, on top of that. We have Saturday afternoons and - Sundays off and Monday once a, month. I met a girl I knew last weekend, when I had Monday, and we beat our feet off doing sight-seeing. I'm look ing out for a bike. I wish I had my American one here. Classified Ads Bring Result. Dancing will start at 9 and continue until 1 o'clock. 48 Fires Started Since First of Year - Forty-eight fires were started since the first of the year, the Klamath Forest Protective as sociation states in its semi annual report. Forty-two of the fires were caused by lightning, and six were man-caused. Camp fires accounted for thrco of tho man-caused blazes with a smoker and debris burn ing starting ono each.
