AFL CONFAB Captain Salesky EYES PROB L OF POLITICS (EUGENE, June 22 (A5) The controversial issue of endorsing political candidates confronted American Federation of Labor state convention delegates today. They were faced with a choice , of adopting resolutions endors ing fourth term for President Roosevelt and Die candidacy of Willis Mahoncy, democratic nom nee for U. S. senator, or on es tablishing a non-partisan politi cal policy. . .-..The-latter-was introduced by S. Eugene Allen, editor of the Oregon Labor Press and chair man or. me laws ana legislation committee. He declared that en dorsements by the convention would lead to disunity and con fusion." A death struggle between la bor and management can result only in fascism, Ur. George Ber nard Noble, 12th regional war labor board chairman,- told the AFL delegates last night He urged labor to clean its own house and support harmon ious bargaining in the public in terest. Because of good labor conditions in the northwest, he said, labor cannot 'expect much higher wage increases unless liv ing costs advance, Speaking for the American Legion, W. M. Tugman. Eugene newspaper publisher, said the greatest tragedy that could be fall America would be for sol diers to come home resentful of labor. . , .-. - .-. .. David Simpson, Portland cham ber of commerce president, said , "It is up to business and labor to work together for their com mon state in the .post-war world." - ' Paul Raver, Bonneville power administrator, asserted that dams do not destroy private en terprise, they encourage it by providing cheap power. The convention adopted a leg islation committee report yester day opposing a state sales tax and government regulation of labor, industry and agriculture. ' "The problem is not how to -prevent bureaucratic control of American labor, industry and ag . riculture and a large degree of state socialism," the report said, "but how to get rid of, it." ' American management and the AFL, said the report, can achieve Meiihe nitur np tA.thn,A nf "o .""v multitude of overlapping agen cies staffed with inexperienced and impractical people." The report labeled unsound the initiative measure for a sales tax to finance increased old-age benefits, and urged defeat of a measure that would shift sup port ot local scnools from prop erty to income tax sources. Promotion to captain In th marine corps cam this week to Jack Salesky. adjutant at the Klamath Marin Barracks. Captain Salesky's job at th local installation is to imple ment th policy of th com manding officer, and he has many contacts with th com munity' in this work. He has been in the marine corps for 26 years, joining in April. 1917, and is an old-time sergeant -major. He wears stars for four major engagements, participated in five expeditions, and has seen ' service in China, Germany. Alaska and many other places. Captain and Mrs. Salesky live at 2109 Halley street - TO BE UNDERTAKEN Entomoloeist Rosenstiel. rep resentative of the U. S. public health service, has set up a mosquito check-up program in the Klamath area. Rosenstiel was here last week for a preliminary survey, and indicated that while ne leu no concern over . the mosquito problem here, a checking proj ect would be established as a precautionary measure. He made a thorough examin ation of the area and establish ed several stations where mos quitoes will be trapped and specimens sent to nis neaaquar ters at Corvallis for examina tion. He was then sent to Kort Monmouth, New Jersey, for five months specialized training as ra dio technician, lie was stationed for a short time at Fort Bliss. Texas, and was then transferred to the signal corps at Camp Shelby, Miss., where he received his overseas training prior to leaving the United States. His first letters from England stated that he liked it quite well there. Warren is also a sharpshooter, having a perfect score with the carbine rifle.
