PACE EIGHT HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Phone Calls Flood Office As Engine Whisile Sticks silBlll By PAT MORGAN Wednesday night after conv mencement, we graduates can say, "We dood it! and "dood it we did. It's going to seem rather queer to be out of school, not to have home work at nights, and not to "cram" any more for high school exams. Now we can meet our teach ers on the street and say, "They were my teach ers when I went to school and they did a great J!', deal to help me eft reach for my education. In fact they did their best to hand it to me! Twelve years is a long time to go to school but in many years 10 come, wen 100K back and those years will seem a very short term. School life seems to grow within us. The friend ship of our classmates, the friendship of our teachers and the friendship of those who helped us through school really means a lot. We might say now that we are really glad to get out of school, but down deep within us we can feel that it is a lot to leave behind and those ideas of being glad to leave are really just big talk. Maybe it is just to pass the thought that school is just "kid stuff" and we really are beyond that, now that we are 17 and 18, now that we are men and women, It's hard to change habits that "We have been practicing for years, so it'll really be hard to fit ourselves to a new kind of life. We may have thought that we had "enemies" in school, class- males wnose habits we didn agree to, but when we start to don caps and gowns and go marching up for our diplomas, all our classmates seem like brothers and sisters who have all gone through the same ordeal. And everything and everybody loons inenaiy. One fact that Stanley Wood ruff, principal, brought out to the graduates during baccalaur eate practice yesterday really hit us hard. This fact was that during school days we were al lowed to pass on things merely 70, 80 or 90 accurate, but for baccalaureate and commence ment we must be exactly 100 accurate in evervthine we do. This fact also starts to apply- to our me alter commencement. Especially now d urine war. Our daily habits and our habits dur ing our working hours must be always 100 accurate. Uncle Sam auicklv shakes his head "no" to things a few per cent off and Adolf Hitler quickly smuces nis head ya. goodie and victory is slowed up a few cays. " Most of the jobs we gradu ates apply ourselves to now that . we are leaving the school on the hill, will be to speed victory .closer. The biggest Dart of the boys are leaving immediately for the- armed forces and that's something that our fathers didn't have to do. They had to really be on their own. But Uncle Sam is going to teach us how to make .our habits change and "jive rwith those of our fellow sailors, soldiers and marines. Writer's Note: This will be the last high school column to appear in this paper until next year's reporter takes over. I wish to thank my friends for bearing with me when this space seemed rather dull, and also, inanKs lor tne many kind sug gestions and compliments you have given me. ' A I've enjoyed writing this every night, even when there was very little to write. I may have vio lated a lot of rules of journalism. but I think everything has turned out just fine. . Thanks again and goodbye. Uncle Sam's calling for me and ne means Dusiness. , . . PAT MORGAN, NAVY TOTALS WASHINGTON, May 20 (IP) Washington has 56,934 and Ore gon da,7Z5 enlisted personnel in the navy, marine corps and coast guard, exclusive of the navy nurses corps, the navy de partment announced. " " "frozen" article you need, ad vertise for used one In the classified-' A steady stream of telephone cans nooaea rne Herald and News office, the police deuar merit and the Southern Pacific switchboard shortly after o'clock Friday night when screaming whistle aroused scores of residents and sent them scurrying for information The 25-minute blast which emanated from the SP yard: resulted when a steam whistle on a switch engine caught and it was necessary to call a me chanic to the scene to release the whistle valve. Although the whistle w a blowing in the midst of hottest election returns, not one person calling in to learn the source of the noise, asked .how the elec tion was going. One woman asked if the wa was over, another wanted know if the president were dead, and still another wanted to know if there had been bad wreck.
