HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, 0RECON PACK TEN 'J- CPORTiJ IJ treamliner J i By RUSS NEWLAND SAN FRANCISCO. May 19 (P) piffle Dept.: A news item states that members of the Pa cific Coast conference will hold their annual spring meeting in June at a place called Hood River, Ore., which is some 40 or 50 miles off the beaten path, east of Portland ... Before the man on the street rushes in to ask why it is necessary to hold this meeting your report er will beat him to the draw to point out he doesn't know either ... There was some sort of an official explanation that the meeting was to be held in an out of the way spot so as not to take up hotel space in al ready overcrowded cities and the northern locale was chosen because six of the 10 confer ence schools are situated in the north . . . One of the purposes of the meeting will be to draw up the 1944 football schedule, or will it be the 1945 schedule? ... Usually they are drawn up a year in advance . . . Then there will be some discussion of eligibility rules and other press ing problems like the Rose Bowl game . . . The meeting is being held In "the north because a majority of the members are located in that section, yet when this ex planation is examined we find that only one northern member, -Washington, played intercolleg iate football last year and not much of it ... In contrast, three of the four southern members carried on fairly full football programs, conditions being what they were and still are ... There is no reason to believe the confeence football program will be more expanded this year than last, in .fact the outlook is less favorable because so many navy and marine trainees who had had some college football experience are now off to the wars ... This still does not explain the necessity for the conference officials scheduling a meeting to transact business which some interested parties think could be bandied partly through the mails and through the commis sioner, Edwin N. Atherton . . . "As it is some 30 delegates will get together to represent the .conference . . . We hope the gathering will be worthwhile. Track Records Will Be Set In School Meet Winners of the grade school track and field meet scheduled for Modoc field Saturday at 1:30 p. m. will set records for at least a year, Joe Peak, physical edu cation director, said Friday. - Due to a change in the classi fication because of the advent of the junior hish schools here. all events will go on the books as records to stand until beaten. Approximately 200 boys from the seven city schools will par ticipate in the competition for ribbon awards and the school trophy. Mills is the defending champion and now has posses sion oi me cup. The United States automo tive industry has produced 80 per cent of the world's motor vehicles since 1900.
