Busch company, St. Louis, was
the successful bidder for 110,000
sacks of Hannchen barley raised
this season on Tulana farms,
' operated by Ben and Dick Hen'
Ml, Malin and by Llskey broth
ers. While the price received
for the grain was not made pub
lie by Raymond F. Welsh, buy
er for the company, reliable re
ports are that the malt grain
in this area has brought better
than $3 per hundred.
The same company also pur
chased 60,000 sacks grown by
Shuck brothers, and 30,000
sacks raised by Lewis Kandra
These crops were grown on
Tulelake lease land.
" This year's crop of barley in
the Tulelake basin is reported
to be one of the finest ever
grown here, weights being re
ported in many fields to be run
ning as high as SB pounds per
bushel.
Damage from early frosts in
the basin was negligible and
harvesting was completed under
ideal conditions with little mois
ture to darken the grain.
The huge crop is being moved
to market as speedily as possible
to permit concentration on po
tato and beet crops that many of
the growers also have under cul
tivation this season.

Mr.-and Mrs. George J. Surpre
nant,' 1202 Division street. Her
brother, Paul, is stationed at the
Lowry Field army air base in
Denver, Colo. For the past two
months Miss Surprenant has
been a lubricator for the South'
era Pacific at Klamath Falls.
She will be transferred to Camp
Lejeune N. C, for tramini

Sailors Fined
For Ship Theft
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 21
(A1) Pleading guilty to taking
nine hams and two slabs of bacon
from their ship, three merchant
marine sailors were fined $50
each yesterday by Federal Judge
Louis E. Goodman.
The seamen were Francis E.
Hatfield, 23, Tacoma; Virgil A
Gates, Scappoose, Ore., and
James G. Godfrey, 23, Portland,
Ore. Judge Goodman gave them
IS days to pay the fines and put
them on probation for a year.

The Berlin radio reported today
in a broadcast recorded by OWI
that the Japanese premier. Hi-
deki Tojo, will make an impor
tant speech tomorrow to an
nounce "drastic measures and
changes within the home front
to meet the present serious war
situation."
. The Japanese cabinet was re
ported to have held an "extraor
dinary conference" lasting from
10 a. m. until 7 p. m. today, with
only a hall-hour interruption.
Roads Not Badly
Hit by Maneuvers
. SALEM, Sept. 21 (P) Roads
in the central Oregon maneuver
area have suffered little damage,
the state highway commission
said today.
There has been some damage
caused to shoulders. Tanks and
heavier vehicles are not using
the highways at all, since they
use ditches wherever possible.
The army has supplied 30 sol
diers to help the commission's
road repair crews.

close Halifax harbor to shipping
last June by sowing magnetic
mines at the entrance but were
foiled by the vigilance of Cana
dian and British minesweepers.
Navy Minister Angus MacDonald
disclosed today.
Although the nail undcr-sca
raiders laid some 60 mines in the'
channel they were discovered so
promptly that not single ship
of Importance was sunk and no
lives were lost, a statement by
MacDonald declared.
A lapidary society Is one in
