An air communique said at tacks were made by heavy bomb ers on rail installations at Bol rano and Trento, on the Brenner Pass line, 700 miles from North Africa. Strike Bologna The heavy bombers also struck at Bologna, farther south but on the same line, and medium bombers raided Cancello, vital rail junction in the Naples area. The attacks on Bolzano and Trento were the first made by the allies that far north of Italy. It was the second raid on Bol ogna. Bridges were blown out and tracks blocked in all these as saults, the communique said. Littered Beeches . The British and Canadians landed on beaches littered with the wreckage left behind as the Germans fled from Sicily 17 days ago, and began establishing the first foothold the western allies have had on .the mainland of Europe since the British were driven out of Greece late in April, 1941. . First announcement from al lied headquarters came shortly after 7 a. m. (10 p. m. Thursday, PWT). The text: v "Allied forces under the com mand of General Eisenhower have continued their advance. British and Canadian troops of the eighth army, supported . by allied sea and air power, attack ed across the Strait of Messina early today and landed on the mainland of Italy." It was emphasized here that the new assault was not to be regarded as a "second front," but as a continuation of a campaign begun in North Africa and mov ing into Europe step by step Tunisia, Pantelleria, Sicily, and now Italy itself. Captain Cummings, Jerry Thomas Pay Flying Visit Hera Captain Bill Cummings, for mer sports editor of The Herald and News, and Private Jerry Thomas, Klamath insurance man now in the service, made a flying trip to Klamath Falls late Thursday. The two men arrived in a plane flown by Xaptain Cum mins from Mather Field. Wives of both service men are here at present. After a lew hours' visit, the Klamath men took off for Sacramento. Robbery Motive In Clatskanie Double Slaying CLATSKANIE. Ore.. Sept. 8 (JP) Robbery probably was the motive in the slaying of Julius Olavsen, 66, Columbia county rancher, and Annie B. Borg lund, 67, hia housekeeper, au thorities said today. State Policemen Raleigh Wheeler and Phil Lowd said both had been shot in the back. Olavsen's bodjs was recovered from a well near his farmhouse today. The housekeeper's body was found last night, fully clothed, on a bed. She had been rolled up in bedclothes. The officers said the woman was shot twice in the left side of her back, apparently as she leaned over a washtub on a bench In the room where her body was found. New Whooping Cough Coses Reported Three new cases of whooping cough highlighted the Klamath county communicable disease report for the week ending August 28. There were no cases of poliomyelitis reported here in the week. Lane county had seven new polio cases, making a total of 16 reported in that county in the last six weeks. Klamath had one case ' of chicken pox, one of mumps and one of syphilis reported in the last August week. '' Classified Ads Bring Results. Sept, 3 (IP) The Athletic Round Table de nied today it had advance in formation on tho invasion of Italy. "We," said Pres. Joe Albl, "Just had confidence." The Round Table yesterday sent 110,000 cigarettes to American troops, addressing them to Reggio Calnbria, Italy. Today Germany an nounced Reggio Calabria had fallen to the allies. Albl said the British eighth army and the Canadians who made up the invasion force "might have to forward the fags to Rome." Long before the official an nouncement was issued, the Rome radio reported that Paris had been bombed. In sun-darkening swarms, Fly ing Fortresses and swift Mar auders swept across the channel under cover of swift-striking Thunderbolts. Londoners got a view of part of the returning formations, ap proximately 150 Fortresses fly ing northward over the city as persons in the street stopped and cheered. The Paris radio said in a broadcast heard by The Associ ated Press that an "entensive raid" was made on the Paris region, adding that the main tar get was the left bank of the Seine. The daylight attacks followed night blows by the RAF against axis airfields and other targets in northern France and the low countries. An air ministry com munique said other aircraft laid mines in enemy waters during the night. The allied air fleets started their attack at the crack of dawn, and observers on the British coast reported that formations of bombers flying very high and in perfect formation swept overhead steadily for 30 min utes. - Marine Recruiters To Be on Duty Here Sergeants Adeline M. Inter-American Affairs Official Resigns Key Post WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 VP) A key official in the office of Nelson Rockefeller, coordinator of inter-American affairs, has re signed because of what he termed "Interference, obstruc tion, delay and unintelligent dic tation" by state department of ficials, it was disclosed today. "I am unwilling longer to beat my head against this wall of in competence and Interference," said the letter of resignation, sub mitted to Rockefeller by James D.
