Cody's Kids Beaten by Riviera Gals Third Straight Title Win In Womon's Swim Moot SHAKAMAK STATE PARK, Ind., Aug. 30 (P) Tho Hlvlcrn club of Indianapolis swept to an easy women's national swim 0ng team championship here yesterday, scoring 46 point to S3 for Hi nearest rival, the "Cody Kids" of tho Mullnomnh Athletic club of Portland, Ore The Riviera swimmers were tied at 10-10 with the Multnomah team at the end of the first day's hostilities, but It was strictly a "one boss" race from there on. The victory was tho third con secutive for the Riviera club. Jack Cody'a Multnomah 300 meter medley group, however, showed the way to all contest ants yesterday. Suzanne Zim merman gave Multnomah a lead at the start and Nancy Merkl, and Brando Helser added to it to give the Portland team a good 15-yard lead at the finish. Individual honors went to 17-year-old Anne Curtis of Sun 0-anctsco's Crystal pool. She won the 400 and BOO muter free etyle and finished second at 100 meters in her first National rimming moot. It was the fourth consecutive crown for team tutored by Coach Charles (Bud) Sowln of the Rivi era club. Ho bogged his first erown with the Lakeside club of Louisville, Ky., In 1040 and now has added three with Ri viera. Earlier New Orleans had cored a 7 to 4 win over Min neapolis. Springfield will play Min neapolis at 2 p. m. (MWT) in the seventh game of the scries, and the winner will clash at 8 p. m. with New Orleans. The tourney could bo con cluded tonight it Springfield should win both games. Other wise It will go to the ninth game tomorrow. The Los Angeles Angels made themselves all but mathematical certainties to cop the league crown by splitting a double header yesterday with Holly wood. The Stars won the first game 2-1 and the Angels the second, 3-0. The Seals split with Oakland, losing 9-3 and winning 3-0. The Oaks won Saturday, 6-1. A quick glance at the stand ings shows the Cards out In front by 10s games with only 34 left to play. The standings fall to show, however, that In the last two weeks the second place Reds apparently have found themselves. In that period they won 14 of 18, including three straight over the Redblrds be fore losing the second half of yesterday's twin bill. Aug. 30 (IP) Two of Eugene's three high schools had new coaches today as the result of a year's leave of ab sence granted by the city school board to Fritz Kramer, Eugene high athletic director for the past 11 years. Henry Kuchera, coach at Uni versity (Eugene) high for the past two years has become coach at Eugene high, and Harry B. Davis, former coach at Globe, Arizona, high will take over. Kuchera's duties at the campus prep school. Father Louis Sohler will remain at St. Mary's Catholic high, the only holdover from last season. Kramer, reported as a candi date as "duration" coach at Wil lamette university last week, has been under observation at St. Vincent's hospital in Portland for a stomach ailment for the past two weeks. Charley Keller and Roy Weatherly each walloped two homers and Spud Chandler won his 17th ot the season as the New York Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Boston Red Sox to maintain their Oi game edge in the American league. He is a graduate of North Dakota State Teachers and gained his master's in physical education at the University of Oregon in 1040. Davis Is a grad uate of Colorado College of I.du cation and coached several years in Colorado before going to Arizona. Kramer, who coached Pendle ton high to a state basketball championship before coming here, has had outstanding foot ball teams at Eugene high for the past 10 years. One of his teams wea the mythical state championship. He is expected to return to the local school for the 1044-43 school year. Eugene high also lost its as sistant coach, Ford Mullen of the Seattle Rainiers who resigned his position as basketball and baseball coach. His place will be taken by Duane Mellem, an other Dakotan who was junior high school coach at Salem last year. and Doug Kenna rounding out the backfield. All saw some service last fall. Kenna Is the speed merchant who was sidelined, at the start of last season with a broken arm. The line will be a reconstruc tion job with Frank Merritt and Caslmir Myslinskl the bulwarks at tackle and center, respectively. They are the only returning reg ulars. Blalk, now In his third year at the point hasn't had a chance to see the Plebes. He knows the class Is the largest ever as sembled but doesn t expect more than a dozen players out of the 1200 freshman would-be gen erals. "And if six out of the dozen can keep up their studies and play football, too, we will be happy, he added. He knows the Plebe roster contains such definite talent as Robert L. Dodds, brother of Tulsa's All-American Glenn; and John M. Minor, formerly of the University of Texas both half backs. Coach Retort (Pest) Welch and his Washington football team ha vb little to worry about rationing this fall. They should get plenty of potato. utner northwest and coast football coaches may have to worry along with 16 and 17-year-olds and 4-Fs. and some have folded up altogether (see Stanford), but Washington is in a good spot. The navy will permit its trainees to play football, and Wash ington is well-blessed with marine and navy cadets, with exper- ence won on other campuses. Tbey will have only two hours a day for sports and Coach Welch said today he would have to limit Washington prac tice sessions to an hour and a half, but that should be long enough. Practice opens September 10 and a check-up today showed 46 men had checked in for uni forms. A dozen or so more are certain to be on hand that date, too. Washington will have the help of some good former Washington State college foot ball timber, which should have Cougar Coach Babe Holling bery gnashing his teeth. Take the backfield, Sam Rob inson, Husky speedbalL, and Jay Stoves, of Washington State fame, will be heading the same direction down the gridiron this year, behind a Washington line. There's Bob Erickson, Neil Brooks, John Wingender and Pete Susick. And Gerry Austin and Bob Zech, too. Fourteen men want a wing berth. Heading the list is Jack Tracy, a letterman, but not far behind are Hec Brown, the bas ketball player, Gail Bruce, promising sophomore. Bob Moles, four-year College of Puget Sound veteran, Ed Roark, St Martin's regular, and Bruce Bern, of Yakima. Three former Huskies, and Husky is the right word, are after tackle posts.
