An opening attempt to extend the recent mild recovery failed. . Bonds were relatively steady. Professionals, brokers said, were disposed to cash even the meager profits and retire to the safety lone to await possible weekend eventualities. Gold mines, scattered aircrafts and industrials did fairly well at the start but the majority back ed down from best levels In the final hour and near-closing de clines of fractions to a point or so were well distributed. Trans fers were around 400,000 shares. In the backward class were V. 8. Steel, Bethlehem, Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, General Mo tors, Chrysler, General Electric, U. S. Rubber, Montgomery Ward, Anaconda, Texas Co. and Amer ican Smelting. Some mines re corded a new high for the year before encountering opposition. Resistance was displayed by Homestake Mines, Mclntyre Por ' cupine, ' Douglas Aircraft "and Johna-Manville. TO u E E NCOURAGED BY 10 SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27 (fP) Tho war food administra tion announced today it would make potato loans this fall to encourage storage of the 1943 crop for 1944 marketing. On Irish potatoes, loans will be graduated and based on sup port prices announced lust spring. Growers and cooperative associations will be eligible. Pa cific const support prices range from $1.80 to $2 cwt. Potatoes stored In approved warehouses will be good for loans at 35 cents per 100 pounds under the support prices up to December 1, when an additional 20 cents will be payable to off set storage costs, with another 10 cents rise in the loan rate on January 1. The Irish potatoes will be tak en on a field run basis, with rates adjusted to the percentage run of U. S. No. 1. Where there are facilities, lower grade pota toes will be diverted to starch and flour. WHEAT CHICAGO,. Aug. 27 (P) A strong demand for oats In the cash market, where prices wcro tlio highest in 23 years, Impart ed firmness to all grain futures today. Profit-taking appeared on the ndvanco and most gains were confined to fractions, with near by deliveries showing tho larg est upturn. The September oats contract at one timo sold at tho best levels slnco 1S20, but hacked down later. Activity was only moder ate as many traders preferred the sidelines In view of tho fact Marvin Jones, war food admin istrator, was scheduled to dis cuss tho new food program on tho radio tonight. Closing price's were around the day's highs with wheat up l-Jc, September $1,451, oats ac high er, September 74c, and ryo Ic lower to a cent higher, Septem ber $1.03M. Orders totaled 84,361,000 board feel compared to 74,101, 000 the previous week and 90, 672,000 for tho corresponding week last year. Shipments wero 82,031,000 to 66,521,000 the week before and 107,330,000 a year ago. 'Production amounted to 03,747,000 while It was B5,. 885.000 the previous week and 104,050,000 last year.
