Waterman Looks For Fighter to Meet Joe Kahut PORTLAND, Aug. 13 (IP) Matchmaker Joe Waterman cast about today for a fighter to meet Jo? Kahut, Woodburn heavy weight, in the main event of a boxing card here August 27 which was to have featured a rematch between Jimmy Garri son, Kansas City, 'and Rudolfo Ramirez, Mexico City. Waterman announced -last night that the Garrison-Ramirez mix had to be postponed indefi nitely because the Mexican wel terweight could not cross the border for several weeks. He said he was not notified why. Their fight here last month was declared a draw. He is, for the purpose of ex act identification, Billy Sarni. Only 15 years old. Not yet out of high school. Yet, he's the first string catcher of the Los Angeles Base bell club, a team that is run ning away from the pack In the Pacific Coast league. A series of accidents project ed the beardless Billy into the spotlignK First, Eddie Fernan das was injured, and a few days later Billy Holm went out with a split finger. The Angels didn't have a catcher. In desperation President Clar ence (Ponts) Rowland went to Sarni's parents. They had in tervened against flattering of fers from various major league clubs the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland In dians and Chicago Cubs. Billy, they reasoned, should stay at homo and in school. But Row land was -persuasive, and, aided and abetted by a $10,000 bonus, one of the highest ever paid by a class AA baseball club, won over the parents. Sarni joined the Angels the next day and in his first turn at bat smashed out a home run. If the club was inclined to be jit tery about a mere youngster handling the catching duties it changed over quickly. Billy has played 12 games and Is batting a neat .321. Bob White Wins Idahoanian Award for 1942 MOSCOW, Ida., Aug. 13 MP) Bob White of Payette, Ida., track and cross-country star for three years, is winner of the Idahoanian award for 1942-43, Athletic Director Babe Brown announced. The entire' coaching staff vot ed for White, now in the intel ligence branch of the army, on a basis of athletic ability, schol arship and personality. He was a member of the Uni versity of Idaho's 1941 cross country 'team which ran in two races an hour apart and won both, taking titles in the Pacific Coast conference and the north west AAU. Boston took the first game 10-8 with Bobby Doerr batting in three runs, two on a homer, but a triple by Luke Appling in the 14th led to a 7-8 triumph for Chicago in the nightcap after Joe Cronin of Boston had hit his fifth pinch home run of the year. Weekend Fishing Prospects PORTLAND, Aug. 13 (AP) High mountain lakes and streams and coastal streams will provide anglers their best fish ing this weekend, the state game commission's weekly bulletin indicated today. The county-by-county report: COLUMBIA Bank fishing along the Columbia river for harvest trout is improving and good catches of catfish, perch and crappies are being made in sloughs. LANE Angling only fair. There is a small run of sea trout in the Siuslaw river. COOS Fishing poor in north ern half of county; fair in south ern part, with Chinook salmon and bluebacks starting to run in Lower Coquille. CURRY Generally poor but Rogue river yielding a feW salmon and steelhead. LINCOLN Several limit catches of bluebacks reported in last few days from the Alsea, Siletz and Yaquina rivers. Some also from Beaver and Lower Drift creeks. TILLAMOOK Rivers yield ing fair catches of bluebacks. A number of limit catches of sea run cutthroat trout reported from the Big Nestucca. JOSEPHINE Rogue river giving up some nice steelhead on flies, and Illinois and Ap- plegate rivers nice catches of cutthroat. CROOK Very poor. DESCHUTES Limit catches being made in Paulina and East lakes both on flies and troll; Tood and Elk lakes good, too. JEFFERSON Several limit catches reported from Metolius river. BAKER Anglers having suc cess in high lakes and Eagle creek. HOOD RIVER Some good fishing with flies on lower Hood river. Badger lake and all lakes in Greenpoint area closed.
