Large Field Tees Off in Ladies' Golf Marlon Mlley Trophy at Stake for 135 in Women's Western Amateur Tourney EVANSTON, 111., Aug. 9 VP) The Marlon Mlley trophy was at stake today as a surprisingly large war-time field of some 135 players teed off in the 43rd an nual women's western amateur golf tournament for 32 qualify ing berths. Single rounds of match play will start tomorrow, continuing until Saturday when the two fi nalists enter a scheduled 36-hole duel for the crown. There will be a brand new winner, for Betty Jameson, the defending champion, will be un able to leave San Antonio, Tex., where she is working at an army post, and Mrs. Russell Mann of Omaha, Neb., a two-time titlist and runner-up last year, will re main on her war job at Rapid City, S. D. Miss Jameson, who also won the 1942 western open, recently returned to San Anton io from Mexico City. This left the field without a former champion, and at least 11 stars were tabbed as favorites to become the 1943 amateur golfing queen in what shaped up as a wide-open race. Regarded among the strongest contenders were Catherine Fox of Glen Ridge, N. J., Dot Ger main of Philadelphia, Kay Byrne of Rye, N. Oregon Juke Box Tax Outlawed PORTLAND, Aug. 9 (P) Oregon's $10 yearly juke box tax was outlawed Saturday as un constitutional. The tax. passed by the last leg- 1 s 1 a t u r e, was discriminatory. since it applied to juke boxes and not phonographs or com vending machines, said a deci sion, by Circuit Court Judges Alfred P. Dobson, Ashby C. Dickson and Earl C. Latourette. The judges granted Sol Fox, Portland juke box operator, an injunction, preventing enforce ment of the law.
