WHEAT
CHICAGO, July 8 (IF)
Groins moved erratically in
heavy trade today, responding
swiftly to a series of rapid-fire
legislative developments on the
corn and subsidy situation in
Washington. The market was
extremely nervous and fluctua
tions were wide.
Advancing as much as 4 cents
in rye during the first two hours,
prices broke sharply around mid
day when the house agricultural
committee killed a proposal to
lift corn ceilings to $1.40 a bush
el, Chicago basis.
News that the senate had
abandoned by one vote a legisla
tive prohibition against the pay
ment of food subsidies brought
renewed selling into wheat at the
close and prices finished i-ic
lower, July $1,471-1, September
$1,481-1. Oats were tc lower to
ic higher, July 71Jc and rye was
ic lower to ltc higher, July
$1.13.

Cigaret Dealers
Must Pay Old Tax
To State of Oregon
SALEM, July 8 (IP) The state
tax commission mailed thousands
of cigaret tax blanks today to
cigaret dealers who must pay
tho commission money they col
lected under the state cigaret
tax law, which was in effect for
only a few weeks two years ago.
The law was killed by refer
endum. Many dealers collected the
tax, but didn't turn the money
over to the state when the law
was killed. The recent legis
lature provided that the dealers
must give 93 per cent of the
money to the state, and that they
can keep the other 5 per cent.
The tax amounted to 2 cents
per package.

of the customary two.
The order permits states to

strip steel not heavier than 22
gauge and listed as idle or ex
cess inventory with the steel re
covery corporation. Specific au
thorization mutt be obtained
from WPB to purchase the steel.
Many states have recently re
ported that license plates are
becoming illegible, and must be
replaced.
