Jack McChesney Wins California Golf Title SAN FRANCISCO, July 5 UPl Jack McChesney of San Fran cisco, a lanky kid who is a re serve in the army air corps, won the northern California amateur golf championship yes terday on his first try. McChesney, 18, defeated fa vored Pat Casey, San Francis co, 2 and 1, in the 36-hole finals at Harding park. Fifteen hundred persons the largest gallery ever to see the northern amateur playoff saw McChesney take his first title of any description, but the big gest for local amateurs. Casey's deficiency with his putter on the short ones was his undoing. ROSEBURG TQ GET ASTORIA, July 3 m Con struction of a $650,000 lumber mill at Roscburg will De startca at once for the defense plants corporation, Charles E. Miller, prominent Clatsop county lum berman, disclosed Saturday. Scheduled for completion by January 1. the mill will cut one inch boards for crating overseas shipments of war materials. Mil ler said. It will have a 350,000- feet daily capacity. The mill will be the first of its kind in the northwest, he said, others of its type being lo cated chiefly in pine sectors of the south. Miller said he would employ about 200 men and will build 50 defense plants corporation housing units near the mill to bo erected near Roseburg's east city limits on a 25-acre tract, 10 acres of which will be log pond. Some 400,000,000 feet of Douglas coun ty timber have been acquired, he added. Senate Committee Recommends Corn Ceilings Be Lifted WASHINGTON, July 5 (AP) The senate agriculture commit tee today unanimously recom mended passage of legislation designed to set aside OPA price ceilings on corn and allow it to sell as high as $1.40 a bushel. The present ceiling limits its price on the Chicago market to $1.07.' Chairman Smith (D. S. C.) told reporters ho would seek to call the resolution up in the senate for action before the summer recess. The Cubs picked up another run in the third and that was all Bar rett gave up. His successor, Dietz, was nicked for two more runs in the ninth. TEACHES ARMY PULLMAN, July 5 (P) Roy Bohler, football coach at Chico, Calif., State Teachers' college where he is on leave, and brother to Washington State's athletic director, J. F. Bohler, has been signed to teach army classes at WSC. Roy was captain and J. F. Bohler was coach of the 1916-17 WSC basketball team when the college won its first Pacific coast championship.
